Wow this really was atrocious

At least it lived up to its name. This movie was not scary... and the characters acted so stupidly... who goes to the woods wearing flip flops? Seriously? This movie would have been better if it were a paranormal film, I know it wouldn't be original, but this was just another one of those really short, stupid found footage films that did nothing for me.

2/10

I would recommend Grave Encounters though.

Very atrocious indeed. The movie was the straw that broke the camels back. I give up on watching these crappy ass found footage movies. Ill just stick to Paranormal Activity from now on. Hell even Paranormal Entity was better than this crap.

This movie wasnt scary...like at all. It even lacks the standard "horror crescendo" present in these movies where events slowly go from unsettling to totally out of control. Everything happens in the last like 10 minutes -- very unsatisfying.

2/10 as well only for the creepy maze.

Check out Grave Encounters it's a very good one... it starts out as a Ghost Adventures parody but with really nice camerawork, script ideas and twists and its scary.

LOL I'm kinda traumatized by these kind of films for now so I think I need to take a break. But I will check it out in the future :)

Haha, ya I don't blame you. I just saw this movie last night and absolutely hated it... it's just a paper thin film riding the coat tails of the genre that Blair Witch really revived.

This movie wasn't very good, but I would never ask anyone to watch that *beep* known as GRAVE ENCOUNTERS. I thought this movie at least had a good idea and pretty good atmosphere. GRAVE ENCOUNTERS was just so awful and felt like it was never going to end. It started out great, but about halfway through crashed. I wouldn't recommend either of these movies.

reply

Most people I've talked to would recommend Grave Encounters because even for its flaws, it's a great ride with a lot of interesting plot developments done very well, and it's actually pretty scary unlike this catastrophe, and so many others like it.

But I guess we'll just have to agree to disagree.

I'll second your Grave Encounters shout out. Decent flick. Not great mind you and fairly derivative of other films and video games but damn it, it was a lot of fun. Spot on parodying of the whole paranormal reality show at first until it dissolves into an absolute *beep* screwed situation. But most of its sights and frights have been seen elsewhere. Solid 7.5/10.
While Atrocious was well...was kinda like one of those dumps that makes you feel like your crapping aluminum foil. You know the ones, they constantly scrape and scratch until finally releasing in an exhilarating plop which upon any inspection reveals an empty bowl and a sore anus. Making you realize you need to drink more water and change your diet. Atrocious is like that for your brain and movie enjoyment.

After watching Atrocious, one might feel compelled to find some kind of a mental enema, I agree.

Apparently I'm one of the few that enjoyed this flick (but I'm also one of the few that enjoyed Apollo 18). I'm a sucker for atmospheric movies without the jump scares. I like long setups as they did with this family. Acting stupid? Cristian and July made me think of my brother and I - we absolutely would do something like this. I thought the setup with the siblings made the isolation more pronounced. To go from having someone close to you at your back and then suddenly you're alone... running out of sheer fright... to find then, only to be separated again. I thought it was effectively done.

I'm a sucker for a well-made found footage flick, which I believe this one to be. My disorientation was that of Cristian's in that I didn't know where in the labyrinth I was. I did not find the camera too bad as it was kept mostly upright and in focus so I at least knew what I was looking at.

As for the 'twist' to flick, it was predictable. Since when does that make a story less entertaining? Honestly, I think everything in the house in the last moments of the family's lives were the most horrifying and well-done. Good audio with the voices, the alarm, the unknown booms; the green/white of night vision; The Shining style axe in the door; the inability to escape. Yes, please.

reply

I have to agree with you on this. It keeps disturbing me ever since the night I watched this. When I said 'disturb', I was referring to the last 20 minutes of the movie. And the house at the end just woah me. It struck me at the edge of my seat.

reply

Agreed...a Blair Witch ripoff of the worst kind...30 minutes of night vision running around does NOT make a scary movie!

I've gone to the woods wearing flip flops. Seriously. And would do it again.

Just for the record.

The title fits the film perfectly. I actually like the found-footage genre. When its done right it can be very affective as far as being scary. But when its bad, it can be really bad. And this movie is really bad. REALLY bad. These people just kept running through bushes for minutes at a time. After about five minutes I wanted to throw up from all the shakiness and then after about seven minutes I was bored. This movie is so bad its not funny.

I would recommend VHS and Grave Encounters.

"Atrocious" describes every one of the "found footage" movies! I have yet to see one that is at all entertaining. They definitely never reach frightening. All I feel is frustrated, irritated, aggravated, bored to a serious degree, and puzzled about why I watch them. People keep saying how shocking and unnerving they are.

People carrying on in the dark, screaming, hyperventilating, sniveling and delivering indecipherable dialogue is truly a waste of time.

At least I'm not alone in my thoughts about this garbage-filled genre. I've encountered enough people who assure me that they are big time-wasters. We just watch them occasionally now to try to see what others see in them.

How on earth can anyone find any of these in the least "scary", let alone entertaining? Thankfully, I see them practically for free on cable movie channels. I never wasted any of my money on even one of these. I thought "Blair" was horribly bad. This one brings along a title that can be applied to the whole genre: atrocious.

One last time: People TRULY think these things are worthwhile?!

Grave Encounters was good it starts out as a parody of Ghost Adventures, has some good and effective plot developments, quality pacing, and a lot of wtfdness. Check it out...

I've seen it. There isn't a single one that has changed my mind one iota about what a ripoff these "movies" are. Film historians will be looking back, wondering what happened! These keep coming like the deluge of reality shows, which I also despise.

I'm 60+ years old. Maybe it's an age thing.

Not one of the stories has been in the least frightening or unsettling!

I just finished my second time all the way through "Atrocious", and it is still in the sludge heap that is FF.

Each time I reach "the moment", I find myself thinking: "Is that all there is?" Maybe that's my theme song for this genre.

Have you seen Sinister? I thought that was a fairly decent modern offering, but alas, most of today's horror has been quite "atrocious" for lack of a better word.

It hasn't come around yet. I'll try it when it shows up.

I've become so disillusioned by movies that I don't mind not being able to go to theaters anymore. Thanks to my father, I've been a film buff practically from childhood, so it's very disappointing that horror seems to have taken a nosedive into the abyss with this genre. I keep thinking that the stories might have worked better as a straight story. If they can't present them in a way in which they look like found footage, why bother? I just do not see the sense in it. Films have a hard enough struggle getting people to suspend disbelief. Wanting to throw a heavy object at the screen means disbelief has crashed and burned.

For me, this genre simply does not work. Enough people have tried for a long time now. I doubt any of these will be remembered except for "Blair" as an example in hoaxing the public. I don't even get that because, after about 15 minutes of the documentary leading up to the film, it was too obvious that it was a fake. So, why did people believe it? Even crazier is that they thought it was "scary"!

I've always loved the horror genre, but there are whole chunks of it that I've written off, including FF and "torture porn".

On a side note, there is background music to reality for those who know how to listen...

I'm not sure that I understand. Are you referring to my signature? I found it in a copy of TK Graphics in the Seventies and always liked it. Back then, when we wanted genre-connected stickers, notepaper and other items, film/TV fans, especially penpals, ordered from TK Graphics.

Now, people just make things with a computer and a printer.

OK!

I always wished there was a score for my life. Imagine if we'd be cued about danger (the shark notes perhaps?), when a romantic interest walked by ("A Summer Place" would be nice, as in that "BTVS" episode), or when it was time to simply relax (I'll have to think about that one...).

I'm a musician, working on my second album, so the signature meant more to me than most.. I hear music in silence, in the wind, its all around us and in us.

I play the bowed psaltery. I practice in my head a lot of the time, seeing how many melodies I can recall.

I definitely understand music on the brain.

Though I don't compose, I do "ad lib" at times.

No kidding.

Very few films in this genre are even watchable, let alone good. It's SO easy to make this kind of film but it's sure as hell hard to make it good. Even films like Blair Witch, which I find unwatchable for the most part, built suspense alot better than this film did.

Alot of it was trying to get us to know or care about the characters, but seriously...who watches a horror movie for just the characters?! You watch a horror movie to get scared or experience thrills, if you happen to like the characters it's merely a side bonus but NEVER the main objective.

In short, screw this movie.

Stuff like this reminds me of "Movie Poop Shoot.com" from Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back.
