Advice needed. Separate stories ?

I want to buy my parents the first season, as they loved The Killing and Millenium. Can anyone confirm whether all 3 seasons are independant ? Obviously the same main characters, but is the whole first season storyline actually wrapped up at the end of the season or does it end on a cliffhanger ? I don't want my parents to be "forced" to buy season 2 if they just kind of liked the first season. Same question about season 2 actually, in case I decide to get the first two.

They're separate story lines in each season, but they refer to things/people from previous seasons. Trust me, they'll love it.

I just started watching the second season. The ending of the first effects the main characters behavior in the second but its a new case to solve. Apparently for the third season the male lead is replaced.
