Although the name sounds absurd, General Butt Naked is no joke. During Liberia's civil war, Joshua Milton Blahyi earned that alias by appearing nude in battle, leading a ruthless gang of paramilitaries who were responsible, by his own admission, for thousands of deaths. Since armistice, he's applied his considerable charisma to preaching and trying to lead a better life. Filmmakers Daniele Anastasion and Eric Strauss follow his search for redemption over several years as he testifies before the Truth and Reconciliation Commission; and seeks personal forgiveness from his victims and their families. The film skillfully brings out the humanity in a country where the levels of poverty and violence can seem surreal. Seldom do you encounter a character as complex as General Butt Naked, who by turns elicits charm, horror, sympathy and suspicion. The film challenges us to confront hard questions about justice and forgiveness that can't be avoided in 21st century. - Thom Powers
