Why didn't the MD turn the home planet into a dust cloud?

The molecular destruction device apparently worked as described, until it was used against the Formics' home planet -- then it just laid waste to the planet's surface.

Any idea why this happened? Or is it a "goof"?

It isn't a goof, that is what the weapon does, it doesn't destroy planets like the Death Star, it just kills all life on the planet immediately.
