Ender's Game reboot in a few years

the 2013 adaptation of Ender's Game didn't do very very great at the Box-Office. that means they'll be an Ender's Game reboot from scratch.

Sadly, I doubt that. This movie was in development hell for years. That it ever got made at all is, frankly, quite surprising. If anyone ever gets another shot at it, I'd bet it won't be for many, many years.

For a similar example, look at the film adaptation of Dune. That sci-fi novel also had/has a large and devoted fan base. It took a long time to make, but it did finally happen. The movie flopped, and it has now gone 32 years w/o a remake, except for a low budget SyFy channel mini-series (which was rather well done, to be fair).

They don't really need to "reboot" since Ender is an adult in the sequel. If they do decide to do Speaker for the Dead they will most likely create it as an individual film.

reply

Orson Scott Card has always said that no matter how successful Ender's Game might have been he was never going to allow any of the sequels to be made.

reply

Really? When and why would he say that?

reply

Because he believes, correctly, that they are impossible to film, as they have very little action and the story, such as it is, consists almost entirely of internal dialogue. Two hours of people standing around and talking, with nothing happening, makes for a boring movie.

reply

Having read the books, I agree with that difficulty (although they made it work pretty well here), and I know he had said this about Ender's Game in the past but I can't believe a studio would option only a single book without the authority to also do the sequels... Do you have a reference to where he said this after optioning the books or are you just referring to past statements that he made..

reply

He has said it every time it comes up.....for example, in each of the audiobook editions of the Enderverse novels, there is an afterword where Card talks about the novel you just listened to, and he talks about the movie and why he doesn't want a movie of Speaker for the Dead.

He also talks in these about the reason for the long delay in making an Ender's Game movie, including the fact that he didn't think it could be done. There were producers calling him asking for the movie rights almost immediately after the novel was released, but he resisted for years because he didn't think it could be done. But Ender's Game is much more cinematic than the sequels because of the battle school scenes.

Here is one article is which he says that he is working on a novel that would work as a movie for a potential movie sequel to Ender's Game, a novel called 'Fleet School'

So, he does want a sequel, he just doesn't want to do Speaker for the Dead.

I think another problem with making Speaker for the Dead is the fact that it would be difficult to explain the 3,000-year gap and the fact that Ender is 35 and Valentine 33 at the beginning of the novel would mean that they would have to recast both of those roles.

I think Speaker for the Dead might be a better book, but the stuff that makes it good, is also what would make it very difficult to film it as a movie.

I assumed he would jump to the Shadow series with the films for that very reason; I imagine he worked it all out ahead of time. I would be interested to see where they took the next film since this one passed all the political stuff which all of the books after this had been super heavy on.. Thanks for the article, I knew he would have had a plan but wasn't aware of that..

Doing the Bean quartet would be cool.

Although, what I am very happy about is that the success of the Game of Thrones TV series has proved that there is a market for extremely faithful book adaptations into TV series.

After HBO's Game of Thrones adaptation there has been MTV's adaptation of Terry Brooks Shannahara series, and there is serious talk of a TV series based on Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time.

This proves that there is a market for long running epic TV series based on science fiction and fantasy novels.

I would love to see an Enderverse TV series that could give the series some of the depth that it deserves. They could even get around the problem of the ages of the cast by doing an animated series. With one 10 episode season for each book, they could keep the series going for almost as long as the ratings remain strong and never have to worry about inventing new stories.

reply

afraid not-the author made his series poison-maybe in a generation

reply

Oh please don't be ridiculous. The series is hardly 'poison', it still sells very well, each volume in the series reaches the top 10 of the New York Times Bestseller list, and sells around 200,000=300,00 copies.

No it doesn't. It means they'll leave the series alone because it didn't make any money.

You're probably just some kid. Grow up, then come back and post.

Agreed. A true or nearer to the book version of Ender's Game is needed. This one with harrison ford was garbage.

I have always imagined it would be presented more like the old battlestar galactica minus all the other aliens.
