Why the fake accent?

The only thing that bothers me is the horrible accent. If they hire Americans to play Poles they should stick with the American accent. Such a shame :(

Kind of like how most actors and actresses from other countries use the "fake" American accent? Should they not be allowed to get into character either?

reply

Yes, it's ridiculous. The woman that Chastain plays was a Polish woman who spoke Polish and who lived in Poland. It's not like she was a Polish immigrant in the US who spoke broken English. There was no need for Chastain to use a ridiculous fake accent.

But she's the only American actress in the movie, and the other actors come from all over the world! Except for Bruhl, they all play Poles, so they have to sound the same. That's what dialect coaches are for. Otherwise, Antonina would sound American, her husband would sound Flemish, her children would sound Eastern European, her friends would sound Israeli. I imagine it was either a Polish accent or everyone would have to speak in a generic British accent. At least they tried to be authentic.

Antonina Zabinski was an immigrant. Born in Russia. Polish was her 2nd language. You can find the below on google.

Antonina ?abi?ska (Erdman)
Birthdate: 1908
Birthplace: Saint Petersburg, Russian Federation
Death: Died March 19, 1971 in Warsaw, Mazovia, Poland

Antonina Maria Zabinska was Polish, her parents were Polish - Antoni Erdman - it was a Polish noble name, and Maria Erdman - mother's sister Jadwiga Biedunkowicz. So Antonina's first language was Polish, it does not matter if she was born in Saint Petersburg.😐

Also Poland was part on the imperial Russian empire until 1918.

They should have cast Johnny Depp. I hear he's part Polish on his mother's side.

Warlock: What, like you're a big fan of the Fett?
McLane: No, I was always more of a Star Wars guy.

Yes, I agree the accent killed it for me. Aside for her lack of empathy on the screen. I don't think I will enjoy this film as much as I would have with a different choice for lead actress.

The one problem I had with Chastain's Russian accent was that it was difficult to understand sometimes. However, what delighted me about this movie was the fact that most of the actors spoke in the native accent (even if they were speaking in the English language). This made it so much easier to get into the feel of the stories Polish setting, rather than listening to a bunch of actors talking in British or American accents. If it's really so corny or wrong for an actor who is British, American or Australian etc to do a phony foreign accent while speaking in English, then I say we probably need to have more films like this in which most of the actors come from the place in question and are permitted to use the accent.
