Dennis didn't realise that his trip was sex-tourism!

I feel after reading some of the reviews, that some parts of this brilliant film is misunderstood.

The trip to Thailand: Dennis is not a stupid man, but he is a simple man, and I think that when he attends his uncles wedding he simply does not realise that his uncle actually bought his wife free or that what his uncle actually has been on is sex-tourism.

Because:
1)At the wedding Dennis could not be directed more star-gazed, than he is. He is utterly in love with the concept of happiness at his uncles speech, and notices nothing else.
2) In thailand the receptionist asks him if he wants to pay for a girl sleeping over now or later, this confuses him greatly.
3) When he brings the first girl home, she completely stuns him by telling him her price

Finally Dennis is not looking for sex. He is looking for happiness and togetherness. His wierd relationship with his mother has left him socially awkward and I feel this has left a hunger for human connection in his heart.
- I am actually leaning towards him either being a virgin or at the very least on a 10-year dryspell

He would not knowingly go on a hooker-chase in Thailand, because he is not a sexual being, he is in search of love

I haven't read all the threads but yeah, that was made pretty clear to me.

Well written; you're exactly right he is simple not stupid.

I don't really buy that. This is a guy that has spend his whole life in the gym around worldly guys. He would not be in the relationship he was with his mother, I just found that unbelievable, and also that he is so innocent and naive. Even so, he has had the same sex urges that all men have and probably more opportunity because of his looks ... this movie was just fake and was trading on the oxymorons of the most unexpected characters in the role.

This is a very restricted vision of the human nature. Some men are oppressed by their mother and can feel "castrated" by her. Dennis' escape is bodybuilding but he remained shy and insecure (like many bodybuilders are anyway). He's got good looks but he doesn't seem to have many friends even in the bodybuilding world. And I don't see why being a bodybuilder could automatically stop his mother's power over him. Obviously he doesn't have much experience with women. He's shut from the rest of the world because of this relationship with his mother and it may take a whole life to get over such a twisted and complex relationship with such parents, regardless of your experiences or daily background.
