HORRIBLE ending!!! (Spoilers)

I can't recall being more disappointed in the ending of a movie. To have invested almost 2 hours in a relationship that spans from WWII to the present when they are FINALLY going to be reunited after ALL these years. And SERIOUSLY, you end the movie with them just standing across the parking lot from each other, just looking at each other?!! That's it?!!!!
I was so angry I literally wanted to break my TV. I'm tempted to write the Writer and Director. I get that all movies don't have happy endings but you need to leave the audience with SOME kind of closure. At least they could have had them EMBRACE for the love of God!!!! I get that maybe they want us left wondering what their fate was.

This movie was based on a true story. If they didn't want to act out the ending, I think it would've only been fair to the audience after investing almost 2 hours to at least have written text screens at the end telling what happened to these characters after meeting.

For those who don't know (there's an article listed on another thread here), they visited each other quite a few times and went to holocaust memorials and places of historical significance to them. They stayed in hotels together. The love was beginning to return. In real life, her husband at some point has died but he is still married. She begs him to leave his wife. He says he has beautiful children and could never hurt his family like this. He continues to write her but after this she says she can no longer be in touch with him and completely cuts off contact. You can't help but feel her heart is utterly broken.

Such a sad ending in real life but you can respect him for honoring his family.

But seriously, I hate the movie for how it ended. They could have at the very LEAST had them end in an embrace, not just LOOKING at each other from across the parking lot. But even better if they would've given some historical reference (text screen summary) as to what they did with their relationship and their lives.

I was initially shocked that the movie was over and had so many questions swirling in my mind but I rather quickly realized that it was perfect ending because it allowed me or any other viewer to imagine the ending of my choosing. It sounds like the true story behind this movie had enough additional material to make a 2nd film - didn't realize it was based on a true story - but I am content that the movie ended as it did.

Thanks for letting me know that there is more info available about this couple's story - I'll go searching now.

Agree. Horrible ending. Just finished watching and I am totally dumbfounded. It's enough to prevent me from recommending it to anyone else. It's like it was an accident.

Being that it's based on true events I can see why people wouldn't like the ending. I didn't know this until I read the posts. But I have to say I thought it ended well. I love happy endings as much as anyone but something different and unknown like this is refreshing sometimes. Leave it to the imagination. Especially when there can be no real satisfying way to end it for everyone really. They get together and thus destroy their current family's? Or they spend some time reminiscing only to return to their old lives? Some would want one while others would want the other. Hard for a director to win that one also. This way is hard to but at least a viewer can imagine it ending whichever way they want. I agree about the true events part though. Might should have stuck with the real story and have the ending reflect that in this case.
