I would like to do a US version Remake

If I was given a chance I would remake and translate this movie for American audiences. I know what you are thinking, how dare you even consider this. But I respect the film and I think most of the themes in the movie would translate well into and American audience, the themes of dying for your love, sacrifice, warrior way, your word is your bond, a man is nothing without his honor, all are themes shared by both cultures.

The obvious tricky part is suicide is not consider noble in western cultures, its consider a sin and an easier way out. If I can over come that, I think it would be possible to make an American version.

Don't bother, US remakes never work. To appeal to US audiences, the giri/ninjo conflict, an essential part of the film, would have to be removed, and thus make the message pointless. As for themes shared by both cultures, this may be so in some cases, but are approached in totally different ways. The suicide would have to remain, the title of the film is Hara-Kiri after all. You could make a US version, but as with most American remakes, the result would be an homegenised version of the original. Leave well alone.

Honestly I had a similar thought. But yeah-homogenization would be rampant. You could hyper-homogenize it by making the story Neo-stylized modern-day, gun kata in place of swords, do a version of the Afghan War, veterans et al. But now we're basically telling another story
...but you can't tell me you wouldn't watch something like that. I would. Nowhere near enough gun fu in the world.

Starring Keanu Reaves as the father... lol this movie couldn't be remade in the US it's all about the idea of samurai honor with something that was only practiced in Japan being a major point in the film, there is no American equivilent to seppuku bluffs or seppuku itself
