The Ending *spoiler (obviously)*

I found this to be a let down. I enjoy films with meaning and depth but seriously he should have sliced and diced the whole clan. These guys were obviously not going to learn the lesson of humanity (as was shown clearly at the end).
What a waste of an exceptional samurai/ex-samurai.

reply

Well that drastically alters the story, especially the meaning. By having all of the clan get their comeuppance they're all taught a lesson (of sorts) and there's justice (of sorts), and I don't think director Takashi Miike or Kobayashi (in the 1962 version) wanted to show that with this story.

You've missed the point of the entire film. Hanshiro went there to die, to shame the people responsible for the agonizing death of Motome, and to challenge the clan's cruel insistence on the martial code of bushi-do. And don't forget, he fought with a bamboo sword, so slicing and dicing was out of the question. Maybe he would inflict a few nasty splinters but that's it. Stick to Kill Bill.

reply

Point being he did not shame them or challenge the martial code. It was life as usual for them after his death. I'll stick to my statement - he should have sliced and diced ;)
Not a fan of Kill Bill tbh.

He did shame them and he did challenge the martial code, he did that in the final 30 minutes. Slicing and dicing with a bamboo sword, not easy. I'm not fan of KB either.

He did shame them by not having to kill any of them. yet only two of them were true samurai (2 of the 3 that lost their topknots), even though they lost their way immediately after.

The head retainer proceeded to lecture him about honor and he decided to dishonor their house by smashing the armor. The head retainer was directly responsible for it, and instead of killing himself, he dishonored his house by lying (via omission) to his master..

Just because there was no immediate satisfaction of him suffering, doesn't mean that he didn't learn anything. Hanshiro proved that there was little honor in that house, whether or not they were willing to acknowledge it. Few people will admit hypocrisy, and those are the ones that eventually (as late as their deathbed) end up suffering for it the worst. Everyone has a conscious and it will eventually haunt you if you lie to yourself.

This is the one thing I love about foreign films vs American ones. American films always have to end with satisfaction in some way (revenge, acknowledgement, redemption, etc), foreign films reflect real life where there is rarely any immediate satisfaction.

Ever see Clowwork Orange? Ever read the book? ;)

*** WARNING POSSIBLE SPOILERS *** ebonyknight best sums up WHY he didn't kill them all, though as shown he obviously could have. To the original poster r_cadell, that is Western-thinking; Eastern cultures have a different outlook of life, as countless films and news reports will attest. Western thinking has more emphasis toward the individual, while the Eastern world (at least was) much more bound by tradition and adherence to culture. That's also probably one of the root causes of the world's strife today - a more pronounced clash of cultural viewpoints (but will let that point be, as it digresses from the film).

And not all American/Hollywood films "...end with satisfaction in some way..."; most do, but there are exceptions. :)

why do fans of a semi-obscure movie (band, tv show, etc.) always have to knock something popular? kill bill was a decent movie, im not a big fan, but c'mon guys.

reply

Agreed... Kill Bill is great for reasons other than the reasons that Ichimei is great...

People who like the book first, only foreign films, or hate remakes before they are even made are all pretentious, and even in real life, the first time someone lets slip that they are pretentious, I no longer bother myself with their opinions regarding the quality of fiction, and actively turn the conversation away from it.

Have you guys seen the news?
