I dont think so. This was planned as a sequel to the American original. The accident she had while in America which broke her legs killed Katie. Hence why Toby (the demon, though im not sure it was Toby or a demon at this point) jumped to the sister and wound up in Tokyo. I think that is about right. Though dont take it as Gospel! I actually really enjoyed this movie. Thought it was as good as PA and better than the sequels.
