Were they intentionally trying to invoke BULLITT in the car chase scene?

Rebecca's wearing a shoulder holster over a turtleneck like the poster (http://www.movieposter.com/posters/archive/main/81/MPW-40684) and driving a Ford Mustang, while Tommy's driving a Dodge Charger, and there's no background music of any kind. Given the time constraints of network TV, I'm surprised they didn't try for a shot-by-shot remake of the chase.

No, it was a total accident and not at all any kind of product placement on the part of Ford or clever allusion on the part of the TV show people. There's no website or contest tie-in where you can win a Mustang either, perhaps with the URL http://www.fox.com/alcatraz/ford/. Neither was there any advance press coverage at http://jalopnik.com/5892454/alcatraz-tv-show-remakes-bullitt-chase-wit h-2013-mustang or day-of press coverage at http://wheels.blogs.nytimes.com/2012/03/26/bullitt-shadow-looms-large- over-alcatraz-finale/. It's all just a complete coincidence.

I found it hard to take seriously the typical main cast member might be dead finale ending (even though we know she'll be anything but) and the fairly heavy handed oh-so-subtle three minute Mustang commercial integrated into the plot (even filmed in a completely different style than the entire series for maximum impact).

That's not really a question, is it?

From the Bullit goofs:

During the chase sequence, the same green Volkswagen Beetle is seen at least 4 different times in 4 different locations in a period of not more than 1 minute.

The chase is just a great idea, copying the goof is inspired.

They were putting an ad for the 2013 Mustang, the same product that sponsors the show.

Ford doesn't offer the 2013 Mustang in highland green. These days, only the "Bullitt Edition" Mustangs come in highland green.

I'd probably be flamed but...
I liked the chase, yes, it was and ad, who cares? I think is OK for some big brand to put money on a show even if the scene is kind of an ad, that maybe is what keeps some shows alive, like someone mentioned Fringe, well they have advertising all over the show :p
When I watched that scene I found it very well done for a TV show and came here to know about it since it reminded me the Bullit chase. One thing is sure, if Ford wanted attention, they got it. Of course there will be the "purist" people who will say "oh you raeped my youth" and stupid things like that but I'm sure that they will have love from way more people.

Space for rent.

She already drives a green '65 Mustang.

I think the Ford Mustang works better than the Chevy cars they have in Hawaii Five-OhNooooo

The green Mustang in Alcatraz is a 67, but in Bullit it was a 68
