Why did Freddie become gay?

There's a scene where Freddie is touring the US, and he calls his girlfriend from a public payphone, he tells her how much he misses her, and then he sees a trucker entering a public toilet and his eyes immediately sparkle and just like that, bam! he becomes gay...
He didn't show any interest in guys until then, how did he become gay by just seeing a truck driver, it doesn't make any sense....

he smoked 3 pots in a row alongside with a whole marijuana and a half. never was quite straight again....

Sounds like a badly written movie. Between that and the scene by scene comparison between Freddie and Malek's performance, it didn't look like Malek had even thought about who Freddie moved like that on the stage. So his movements mimicked Freddie's, but lacked the power.

Psychological research has found that approximately half the reason is a combination of genetic factors, and half is nurture and culture.

reply

This is not true though. We know from gender dysphoria studies that the nurture/culture factors are a tiny impact and the vast majority of people will turn to what the genetics tells them even if they were never told that as a possibility. Theres a reason why we started treating genital mutilation differently in the 90s when we realized that no, a hormone therapy cannot turn someones gender.

reply

Actually, it is true. Do some research.

reply

I have. Perhaps you should do the same.

reply

Well, first of all Freddy was Bisexual. In case you dont know, meaning he was attracted to both men and women. Secondly, this is genetically determined at birth. You do not become or stop being bisexual (or gay for that matter).

Freddie was always attracted to men. He attended an all boys school in India through high school where I'm sure there was some sexual experimentation there.

He did not become gay with the trucker scene. That is dumb. The trucker scene exists to illustrate that Freddie was sexually active with men. Rock stars are not usually very shy about having sex. While hetero rock stars engage in lot's of casual sex with women a gay rock star would naturally have casual sex with men.

Gay men are under social pressure to be "normal" he was raised in a rather conservative way. The movie implies that while his sister knew he was really gay his parents regularly pressured him to settle down with a nice girl. His relationship with Mary was his attempts to do that but his sexual appetite was for men. That is what the trucker scene was about.

Mary's importance in his life was that she truly loved him before he was rich and famous. He could trust her.

An excellent answer.
