Should have been bolder and gayer

The movie is too safe and pg13 for the story it covers (or should cover).
And it's too bad because it could have been truly great.

Doesn't really do justice to the source material by sterilizing everything, it's as hip as a mom trying to be cool with a son by buying him the clean version of his favorite rapper album.

I don't like to critique movies for what they should have been, but this one, based on this story and these people, really should have been different and dared more. It feels as authentic as times square today compared to what it was in the '70s.

I don't think Freddy would approve.

LoL love that mom/rap LP analogy!

Thanks for your post. I couldn't explain what seemed so "wrong" with the movie. It seemed ... superficial to me,, and ultimately uninteresting.

Left Freddie seeming like a victim. That just doesn't sit right w/me.

Yes you are right on, this movie was guilty of that too, unfortunately.
I suspect that, to "benefit the mainstream viewership" (in other words, spoonfeed their own version of facts), the production decided he had to be painted that way:-(

Bolder - yes, gayer - ewww. There's nothing enticing, intriguing, or interesting about a man with poopoo on his peepee.

Ok but it is also about a very gay icon, so no matter your opinion it should have showed more of it. Freddie almost seemed straight here.

Fair enough, but I think a better way to tell that part of the story would be to show how Freddie’s dangerous and unhealthy lifestyle brought a premature end to such a supreme talent.

1 even IF that was true, I doubt it would be a great idea to point the finger against his sexual orientation by describing it only as dangerous and unhealthy. It would certainly be unpopular and attackable.

2 what if such a lifestyle also brought his positive traits, such as his artistry and his genius? Why focus on the negative?
