The reviewers don't seem to like this

just 60 on Rt.

Ironically, a lot of Queen's albums back in the day were met with similar lukewarm praise from" professional critics".

reply

Yeah, they listed some of the actual reviews of the album during the movie. Bohemian Rhapsody goes on to be #1 fifteen years apart.

I don't think Queen had even one great album. Lots of great singles, but no single LP that rose to even the top 1000 albums in rock history up to the mid 80s. This probably had something to do with the lukewarm critical response during an era when the album was king.

reply

Subjective of course; their first 5 albums are all great imo. Not sure what you mean by ....no LP in top 1000s till mid 80s. They had several top 10s and even if some critics dismissed them, which they did, it didn't stop the people from buying their stuff.

reply

Night at the Opera is a superb album, a lot of their other albums contained great songs with a few experiments thrown in, overall I bought probably 8 - 10 of their albums and managed to listen to all of them.

reply

I think Queen is a great band with no single album that rose to the level of greatness. Many of their singles raise them into the highest level of the rock pantheon, but in my opinion Night at the Opera isn't consistently great enough, or even groundbreaking enough, to be considered a great album. I guess I have high standards. Other "great" rock bands that I feel the same way about include The Kinks, The Jam, Eric Clapton (solo), Dire Straits, Janis Joplin (all incarnations), The Grateful Dead (especially so), and Elton John. Maybe I shouldn't have mentioned Clapton since he has Layla and the Cream albums to his credit. I don't particularly like Cream, but I give them major bonus points for innovation.

reply

Fair points and you got me looking at Rolling Stone's top 500 Albums of all time which only managed to find one Queen album in the list, A night at the Opera at 231, so I got the fact that it is their best Album according to some experts but as you suggested no as great as some people are led to believe. Thanks for the commentary

Don't worry about it. Critics are chock full of insecurities that are only assuaged by insulting those who are far more talented and successful. Makes them feel good about themselves.

I haven't seen this film and won't until it comes on "free" TV because I won't give Hollyweird another penny as long as I live, but the critics wouldn't stop me.

People who have actually seen it have loved it.

reply

Totally agree.

My daughter in law saw it last night, and she absolutely loved it. For context, she just turned 30 last month.

The critics pretty much say it's a by-the-numbers biopic, but so what? This film is highly entertaining, the re-enacted live performances are fantastic. Malek does a great job, he really poured himself into the role. No, it's not full of twists and turns but like Freddie himself, this movie does what it says on the tin. It's pure entertainment from start to finish.

Well said!

There will always be fan-favorites that do well commercially but mediocre or poor reviews by critics. Conversely, plenty of films with huge critic support are not commercially successful. Beside, the critics are mixed on BH, but it looks to be a successful to very successful movie.

reply

"No, it's not full of twists and turns"

It is for someone who know very well the story of Queen.

The success and audience love for the film tells you the critic's didn't win out on this one. I was a bit worried going into this as a big Queen fan (who doesn't like them) but I loved every minute of it (sure it has one or two inaccuracies) and Rami Malek is great as Freddie and the songs are legendary. Great to see the audience love it.

Are we ( Audiences) the ones which made the Oscar Nominations happen? I always wonder that that our love for this was too strong for awards to ignore it.

Its a film which was mostly hated by critics that I thought that no matter how much we audiences loved it would never get into the Oscars.

I remember discussing this film with my friends on our group chat and how much we all loved it but one of them said it will get a lot of nominations at the Oscars and I told them it wouldn’t because of the critics reception.

When it was nominated for the Golden Globes I was like okay this was luck, it won’t go beyond here and then happened all the others hehe

With all these I didn’t care if it didn’t win best picture the nomination for me was the their reward. Of course I wanted this to win best picture but if it didn’t. I thought who cares this film got much further than I expected. It’s a film which succeeded despite the Critics hate for it.

When it got the Oscar nominations I thought. This wins or not doesn’t matter much it got nominated for Best Picture the academy listened to us audiences and the box office this Time.
