Biological father

One thing that has always, well for lack of better term bothered me, was the absence of the kids real father. The movie briefly mentioned that George wanted to adopt them. Was he completely out of the picture? I know in the 70s children of divorce usually went with the mother. But surely he must have been at least visitation rights or something.
