Martian Child, Little Miss Sunshine, The Magic of Belle Isle and The Perks of Being a Wallflower I'd say are in the same ilk as this movie. All GREAT movies!

take a look at "Adventureland" and "The Perks of Being a Wallflower". both are great but adventureland has more similarities, especially regarding to the setting.

If you have Netflix (or find it online), the film "Camp" is a great movie about the relationship of an abused child and his camp counsellor

There is some overlap in the angst of an awkward teenager and difficulty with parents dating in 'The squid and the Whale'

You should check out Little Miss Sunshine, Steve and Toni both in another great indie comedy together.
