Girls dont do that

If beautiful, intellectual girls such as Robb's character went out of their way to befriend awkward 14-year-old boys with poor people skills like Duncan, the world would be a very different place.

Agreed.

I did feel the discussion across the porches was plausible, and even the backyard party contact. However, Susanna pursuing Duncan, even if she has a somewhat relatable situation, was indeed extremely atypical.

Nevertheless, I do feel obligated to be cliche and state the obvious, it is movie, i.e., meant for entertainment, and thus fantasy situations like this shouldn't be analyzed with an objective eye.

She seemed pretty sick of her bitchy friends so I took it as believable that she was looking for something besides hanging out with them anymore. And felt drawn to his dorkiness since her little brother is, and also since she identified the awkward post-divorce feelings. I didn't think it was entirely implausible.

She was sort of an outcast herself. We could see it in the beach scene where she didn't feel interested by anything her friends talked about or did. With someone like her mom, girls like her firends and a situation similar to that of Duncan's, it's realistic to try to befriend a guy like him, specially if he's the only person around you you can relate to.

A pretty girl can't be a nice person with an open heart? No stereotyping there.

She was that 3rd or 4th most popular girl in school who is a friend to everyone but nobody notices it until they're 30. The one we want to raise our own kids to be like because we weren't.

Perfectly put!

Thanks! Susannah seems to be the most misunderstood character in the movie. Mostly by horndogs who can't get past her looks.

OP has a good point.

Its that man again!!

false I've known a few. I will say its rare though.

If this were an 80's John Hughes type movie, she would have fallen romantically in love with him. I didn't find this nearly as hard to believe.

Exactly. I think she just found a kindred spirit, somebody else going through similar sh!t. And she wanted to connect. Teenage girls aren't always as superficial or judgmental as people think they are. Even the pretty ones.
