Because in the old days people would see this title in a video store while perusing the horror section, rent it on a goof, and then recommend it to a friend. Nowadays people hype movies through the internet, and it just isn't the same. For some reason if I am looking at music on Amazon, or some other site, there are recommendations of what I might like. Usually these sites get it right with music, but I do not usually see the same success rate with movies for some reason. Plus just seeing a list of movies you may like as well isn't the same as holding a box in a store. Music started in the same way, you didn't see the artist, you heard a song on the radio, or your friends told you about it or played it for you. Movies were about posters, trailers, video or DVD boxes, or work of mouth. The kids nowadays get into some weird and obscure stuff, but there's SO much and you can't watch every movie, unlike music where most people figure out if they like it in seconds. Video stores had limited stock, which sometimes forced you to pick a movie you didn't even plan on renting but you wanted to watch SOMETHING that night. I can't tell you how many weird great movies I found that way. I am guessing in 10 years this movie will have gathered a much stronger following, but right now it is up to us to force the kids to watch it so they can force their friends to watch it. I did that with Ichi the Killer and Audition when those first came out, and now everyone I know online has already seen them. Keep recommending it and eventually this will be hailed as the classic that it is.
