A horrible movie because the directors suck
I'm a fan of anthology movies. I'm a huge fan of Tales From The Crypt. So I checked this movie out on Netflix. I knew nothing about it, other than it was a horror anthology movie. Boy was I disappointed.
The biggest problem with the movie was the tone. I get that it was horror comedy, tongue in cheek. But it's been done way better, a lot more times. This movie falls flate because the directors wink too much at the audience and the acting and writting suffers because of it. Yes, the premiss of the movies, within the movie movie are silly to begin with, but if they didn't try so hard to be funny, it would've made the movie a lot better.
I get that Wadzilla was a spoof on 50's sci-fi movies, like The Fly or The Blob. Someone needs to tell Adam Rifkin that he can't act, so he should stop trying. I saw him in Homo Erectus (another movie that suffers for the same reasons) and he was horrible in that. Wadzilla could have easily been really funny, but the acting goes way over the top to the point that it's not funny, it's just bad and it makes you enjoy the movie less. A lot of the jokes you could see coming. I actually knew what some of the lines of dialogue were going to be before the actor's said them.
I Was A Teenage Werebear. Again, might've been funny if it was played right. The movie really felt like a Troma movie, in a bad way. Again, the acting and writing suffered because of trying to be too silly and funny, but failing miserably. Gaby West, who I liked on Scream Queens does a good job, until she's hit on the head and becomes a drooling idiot. It wasn't funny. It made me lose interest and talking with her tongue turned sidewise made he look like a really bad actress. It was very Lloyd Kauffman. Because the idea was so out there, if they would've played it stright, it would've been so much funnier.
The Diary of Anne Frankenstein. Again, not to beat the dead horse, but if you're not funny, don't try to be. If you can't write jokes, don't try to write jokes. It felt like a bad SNL sketch. It could've been funny I guess if someone wrote it better.
The zombie drive in was the only watchable part. Yes, the beginning was really stupid and made no sense, but whatever. I liked the zombie drive in stuff better. I could've done without all the movie quotes. It got a little annoying.
I mean really look at Night of the Creeps or The Monster Squad or even Return of the Living Dead. They had humor, but weren't winking at the audience saying. "Isn't this funny?"
