Why so controversial??

This movie had fewer violent scenes than Goodfellas and probably less crime. Also the sex scenes weren't even graphic. What, because she put a chicken in her mouth as if it were a penis? THAT is what everybody is getting worked up about? Goodness gracious. Olympus has fallen had more graphic violence than this film. What a bunch of wimps.

Lol! You are so right! While it's fair to say that this flick is disturbing (kinda like Blue Velvet), I personally found it to be highlarious, especially the now infamous chicken leg blowjob. Anyone who fails to see the dark humor is simply an uptight a-hole! :-)

reply

It was the violence and threat of violence or the implied violence.

The thing about the chicken scene was not its sexual aspect, I thought he was going to ram it down her throat and choke her.

Its that man again!!

reply

Yeah pretty tame film really, although the end is pretty brutal and f#cked up (by mainstream standards).

Funny to watch everyone falling over themselves and calling it "sick". Yeahhhh no.

Guessing the controversy you refer to was the flap over the MMPA rating. I thought the film bordered between PG and PG-13 yet others felt otherwise. I remember when Midnight Cowboy was released in 1969, it was rated X, same as hard core porno with men in black socks and masks. By today's standards it's almost a Disney film.

I think the compilation of insinuated incest, placing a hit on one's mother, a dog left on a chain in the rain, beating up a woman then making her suck a chicken bone and finally Sharla's pubic hair, more thick than the Amazon jungle....brought the rating's people to their knees. They had no choice.

I've looked at the differences between the R rated version and the unrated version, which would've been NC-17. I just cannot for the life of me understand why this could possibly have ever been an NC-17 when things like Saw are rated R. Don't misunderstand me, I think this film is very adult and not for kids in any way, shape or form. All just seems very hypocritical and a massive case of double standards.

I'm from the UK and I seriously don't get how some films get a 15 over here. I love Clerks 2 (rated 15 here) but it is extremely adult. I guess the MPAA and BBFC are as hypocritical and two-faced as each other.

insinuated incest ? B/w wwho brother and sister
He, chris having his step mom's vag near him?
Thats Not incest!

I didn't find the picture particularly controversial either, or even "dark" as many people seem to claim. The chicken drumstick scene had me howling with laughter as a matter of fact. Funny stuff.

The poster above said it boridering pgb/ g-13 ..

Are younmsc

Bo way.

It should be R but uncut

Why do you people find it acceptable for a woman to be beaten and then humiliated sexually with the chicken leg?
No one has respect for women any more. How about if someone felt like doing that to your mother or sister or wife?
It's ultra violent in other scenes as well. Kicking people in the face isn't hard for you people to watch? Seriously? Not to mention being beat in the face with a big can?
Movies like Saw are just stupid. You know what to expect with movies like that. How would someone know that Killer Joe was going to have violence against a woman and then forcing a form of rape against her?
You people have been too desensitized.

reply

To desensitized for violence against women?
Go watch 100 movies 100 head shots on youtube. Only two are women. TWO! Clearly glove hands are currently already being worn when dealing with violence against women. Probably because men by and large rarely sue and complain about frivolous *beep* and can enjoy the spectacle that can come in an intense dramatic recreation. Clearly seeing 100 people shot in the head is horrible, but the recreation of it by John Woo in action movies, it can be quite beautiful and exciting.

Deliverance, Hateful Eight, American History X. All have Rape scenes in them, all have rated R. All didn't have people whining to the makers about "What if that was your father or brother?"
Had a "Chicken Leg," been used in those movies, they might have even snuck away with a PG-13, especially Deliverance, the rape scene aside, it's just a tale of survival.

Don't call people desensitized when maybe some are just too sensitive. Fact is, the overwhelming majority were energized by those movies. They LIVE for a cinematic experience as raw and as good as that. They chose to see it while they were not working for food or for bills.

How would someone know that Killer Joe was going to have violence against a woman? MPAA. Reading reviews. Plot keywords on IMDB. Many ways.

reply

Jeez don't forget to grab your balls when you leave the house... Fucking pussy. It's a movie, it's fiction... Some people are simply not sensitive crybabies.

Amazing how watching a movie is taken so seriouly this days. It´s like "watching" = "to endorse anything the movie shows".

Do I have to find war "acceptable" to watch Saving Private Ryan?

Do I have to find slavery "acceptable" to watch Spartacus?

Do I have to find cheating "acceptable" to watch Indecent Proposal?

Do I have to find water poisoning "acceptable" to watch Erin Brocovitch?

Do I have to find ship sinking "acceptable" to watch Titanic?

And if I watch Joan of Arc, I need to think how I would feel if someone does that to my mother or my wife.
