I loved how dumb the characters were.

I mean that as a compliment. So many films these days are so concerned with making the characters so cool, hip, edgy, and super intelligent. Joe was really the only smart person in the film. When it's done the right way, writing characters to be unbelievably stupid is very satisfying. A nice change of pace.

It is not easy to write good stupid characters.

It's that man again!!

Agreed.

Joe indeed was dumb. He committed murder and his liberty was depending on these stupid rednecks not telling anyone. Dottie talked out loud in the public about the plan. She would have blurted out something later even if all went good for Joe. Also, if he was this mastermind criminal, he should have done the research on the family and their scheme. Including the insurance policy. As a detective, I'm sure he could have pulled out the information on who was the beneficiary on that insurance.
To me Joe was not a belieavable character.

That's a good point-although quickly after first meeting them Joe was ready to walk away-until he saw Dottie. I think she clouded his judgment from that point on.

Though that doesn't excuse some of his decisions.
