Needlessly complicated to make it "twisty"?

I was underwhelmed by this film and as others have pointed out, the red herrings don't necessarily work. For example:

1. There are only three male characters in the film. Two of them are called Mike, for no other reason than for Christine to suspect her doctor.

2. Christine flips out at the reservoir (see point 1); the doctor chases her with a needle and knocks her out. So if someone is desperately afraid that you're a dangerous criminal, the best thing to do is silently chase after them with a loaded syringe?

3. Christine's memory "resets" every morning (though it's not at all clear why). Why doesn't Mike just tell her he's her lover?

4. Though not a red herring, why does Christine insist on recording her video diary in the bathroom with precious moments to spare? Ben/Mike is out at work all day - why not make a recording at 4:30pm (when she's had a good chunk of the day to find out things), well before he gets home?

This wasn't a bad film, but I felt like they inserted "who can we trust?" strands because they wanted it to be that kind of movie, rather than because the story was best served by them.
