more to it than just Svankmajer meets Tarkovsky?

The emphasis on a sequence of compelling images rather than a "storyline" (i.e. events that "make sense") left me in mind of a cross between Jan Svankmajer and Andrei Tarkovsky (or perhaps the enigmatic "The Return").

But my guess is there's really more method in this madness than what I grokked. What didn't I "get"?
