IMDb Message Boards Announcement

IMDb is the world’s most popular and authoritative source for movie, TV and celebrity content. As part of our ongoing effort to continually evaluate and enhance the customer experience on IMDb, we have decided to disable IMDb’s message boards on February 20, 2017. This includes the Private Message system. After in-depth discussion and examination, we have concluded that IMDb’s message boards are no longer providing a positive, useful experience for the vast majority of our more than 250 million monthly users worldwide. The decision to retire a long-standing feature was made only after careful consideration and was based on data and traffic.

Increasingly, IMDb customers have migrated to IMDb’s social media accounts as the primary place they choose to post comments and communicate with IMDb’s editors and one another. IMDb’s Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/imdb) and official Twitter account (https://twitter.com/imdb) have an audience of more than 10 million engaged fans. IMDb also maintains official accounts on Snapchat (https://www.snapchat.com/add/imdblive), Pinterest (https://www.pinterest.com/imdbofficial/), YouTube (https://www.youtube.com/imdb), and Tumblr (http://imdb.tumblr.com/).

Because IMDb’s message boards continue to be utilized by a small but passionate community of IMDb users, we announced our decision to disable our message boards on February 3, 2017 but will leave them open for two additional weeks so that users will have ample time to archive any message board content they’d like to keep for personal use. During this two-week transition period, which concludes on February 19, 2017, IMDb message board users can exchange contact information with any other board users they would like to remain in communication with (since once we shut down the IMDb message boards, users will no longer be able to send personal messages to one another). We regret any disappointment or frustration IMDb message board users may experience as a result of this decision.

IMDb is passionately committed to providing innovative ways for our hundreds of millions of users to engage and communicate with one another. We will continue to enhance our current offerings and launch new features in 2017 and beyond that will help our customers communicate and express themselves in meaningful ways while leveraging emerging technologies and opportunities.

DAMN IT!!!!!!!!!!
How am I going to keep in touch with you guys?!?!?!?!?!

reply

I'm crushed and I know the reasons they are listing are *beep* It probably has everything to do with the bottom line. I'm going to be vocal and I don't have accounts on any of those sites but Twitter. How do you compare Twitter to these forums? But I'm going to complain about this all those sites.

This is ridiculous to compare these forums to any of those other social media sites. It's like apples and oranges. I am crushed, totally crushed.

reply

I am too. I want to be able to keep in touch with some of the people here. Perhaps we can find something somewhere else.

reply

I just came here to post this. This forum of boards has been my major outlet for the last 10 years.

I think I need a stiff drink.

reply

I'm not going down without a fight. I've already started on Twitter. There will be more people complaining since it is new news. If I have to join stupid Snapchat I will. Who owns IMDB anyway?

reply

IMDB is owned by Amazon. I have already sent a very terse email to Amazon, especially since Amazon gets so much of my money every month.

reply

Do you think the decision has to do with the cost or the inability to control content? There's no other place that specifically talks about entertainment, is there? If Amazon owns IMDB, they're probably trying to change their focus from disseminating information to perhaps creating content.

reply

IMO it has nothing to do with control of these boards. They are and always have been good about policing these boards and taking care of the trolls that get reported even though they do usually come back under a new name.

reply

The word is it's because the trolls have taken over & frankly I don't think IMDb has control over the boards. I think their technology is outdated and they don't have the manpower. Twitter can control trolls - they didn't always, but they've gotten better, but it all goes back to having the technology. Maybe IMDb is creating a refined communication system?

reply

This stinks! This is total BS!

Seriously, I have no other social media and truly enjoy coming to these boards, even with some of the frustrations from trolls and mean posters. NOT happy!!!

Seems like the trolls have won. This really sucks, even boards I don't post on I still like reading the threads. This is almost as bad as when Television Without Pity shut down. This is the only place I can go to talk about TV shows since my friends only watch a few of the same shows I do. I doubt anything anyone does will change their minds though. People protested for TWoP and it didn't help :(

reply

I enjoyed this board much more than TWoP...believe it or not, I think the posters there were much nastier and had superior attitudes. Same with the Administrators - their posting rules were Draconian. I stopped using it years before they shut down.

I definitely agree with the mods being very heavy handed there. But I absolutely LOOOOOVED the episode recaps!! Sometimes it was better and more funny than actually watching the show lol.

reply

Oh that is true, I forgot about the recaps, they were pretty hilarious!

reply

I don't know what TWoP was, but signing a petition isn't going to hurt. As far as I know there is no other place like this. I guess if there is, someone will let us know.

reply

TWoP was amazing. They had really great writers who would do like 10 page recaps of all the current tv shows. They were always super snarky and hilarious. Their message boards were decent but their mods were very strict and everything was a little heavily monitored. I'm pretty sure all the recaps are archived so you could go to the site and read them if you wanted.

reply

Why was it shut down?

reply

NBC shut it down, I think because it was too expensive to keep up. Here's an article on it

It is all about money. They don't care about trolls. If they don't have people here clicking on the ads and buying things, they don't make money. Most people went to social media sites. None of my original friends are here. They all went to Facebook. IMDB has lost a great deal of money and when they are maintaining a site like this, they expect to make money.
To think that a few snarky trolls are the reason that they are shutting the boards down is ridiculous. They don't care about what you post or how many people come on here to cause trouble. It's about how much it cost them to maintain the site compared to how much money they are making from it and when the scales tip the wrong way, they would be foolish to continue. It is a business like any other.
Knowing how websites work, it is all about making money.

reply

After thinking about it, most people probably come to the conclusion it's about money. Everything is about money.

None of my original friends are here.
I guess that means you don't consider me you friend. 😖

reply

Cinles, of course I do but I had a big group of people that I use to post with and they all left and went to Facebook. I finally joined there too but I still check in here sometimes.
I guess you could be one of the former people that posted on the boards I was on and you just changed your board name but as cinles, I do not remember you.
Our group posted on Jon and Kate plus eight every day. Also many were on Little People Big World. We posted every day and got to know each other more personally by private message. These boards were always busy. Not so much now...

reply

I thought you were talking about Sister Wives. I've never posted on those other boards. Sister Wives is the only reality show I've ever watched, but I've been posting here regularly since the show started.

reply

No, I was here years ago. Myself and many others came on IMDB every day. It was quite a group...

reply

I know you have posted here for a long time and I also know people come and go. I never posted on any other reality TV board, but I do remember some of the people who used to post here. Who are you talking about specifically?

reply

Just looked at all my old friends names and most of them had added harpy to their names but none of them are here. There are way too many too list here. They were Jon and Kate posters. Lots of fighting went on on that board...

reply

So where are you posting now?

reply

Just here. The only other place I go is Facebook and that isn't about tv shows...

reply

I am working on opening a board for people to talk about their favorite shows. If I am successful, I will post a link for anyone to join that wants to...

reply

Mort, Edit and I are still here! The harpies all changed their names after Jon and Kate was cancelled. I saw a few of them for a while at the TWOP boards before it got shut down.

reply

I wondered if they changed their names but when I looked at my list on here, it has them as not posting for years. They must have opened all new accounts too. I don't remember you or Edit but you guys probably change your names too...

reply

This has been my board name for the last decade. I did have another account prior to that, I think my board name was TheWolfMan.

I came late to the party with Jon and Kate. I only posted the last year they were on, mainly to get them shut down. The harpies loved me because I posted links to protest Jon and Kate being on air and how to get hold of their advertisers.

As far as LPBW, I have been a regular there for years. That is where I recognized your name when you started posting here. I started posting on the IMDB LPBW board when Matt's own board @ mattroloff.com/talk got a little too strange for words.

To be honest, when it came to TLC shows, I mostly posted on TLC's boards, when they still existed. I think my name was either TheWolfMan or Greywolf. There is a reason for that. 

reply

I was on the TLC boards too. I loved those. They were fun...
