I was thinking the same thing about all of that. When they made it to the finale last week, I thought to myself, Chris or Sally are going to win because Sally's the only woman or Chris has a sick baby. Matthew doesn't have enough drama going on. Lol
As far as the choosing their help, I can see how they would think Chris did better because he worked harder, but why allow any of them to choose who they worked with if they know one helper chef would gice one finalist an edge that they think would be unfair? That kind of makes it unfair to any chef that would choose the best helper. It's not Sally's fault the they told her to go first and then ave her the first choice for the second chef. Like Matt said, he would've doen the same thing. Also one of the judges said that Sally was smart in choosing the best helper that could do what she wasn't good at.
If they wanted the chefs to have an equal chance at the best and worst, the chefs should have pulled knives for the numbers of the two chefs they'd be stuck with. If it was that important to have the chefs do the most work, then they could have made a rule that the helpers could only do prep work and helping in put the disply on the table, but all the display had to be designed AND assembled by the finalists alone.
