'The Green' wins top honors at FilmOut San Diego's LGBT Film Festival

SAN DIEGO – “The Green,” a thought-provoking film about a gay teacher in rural Connecticut who unfairly comes under suspicion of inappropriate behavior with a high school boy, was the big winner at FilmOut San Diego’s 13th annual LGBT Film Festival.

Under the category of 2011 FilmOut Festival Awards, “The Green” won Best Narrative Feature (for screenwriters Paul Marcarelli and Molly Pearson), Best Actor in a Supporting Role (Cheyenne Jackson), Best Actress in a Supporting Role (Illeana Douglas) and Best Direction (Steve Williford).

Under the category of 2011 FilmOut Audience Awards, “The Green” also won Best Actor in a Feature Film (Jason Butler Harner). “The Green” was the Closing Night selection and was one of the top draws at the festival.

"The Green" explores how homophobia transforms a small town that first welcomed the gay couple from New York into a community that leaped to the conclusion that the teacher was guilty before proven innocent of child-abuse charges.

Writer/director/producer Keith Hartman’s comedy, “You Should Meet My Son!” was also a big winner, collecting audience awards for Best Narrative Feature (John Carrozza, Laurence Ducceschi and Keith Hartman), Best Actress in a Feature Film (Joanne McGee) and Best Actress in a Supporting Role (Carol Goans).

"You Should Meet My Son!" is about a conservative Southern mom who discovers that her adult son is gay and, after an initial shock, becomes determined to find him a husband. Along with her sister, the fish-out-of-water mom heads to the local gay bars to find suitable candidates in a hilarious and heartwarming laugh-o-rama.

The Freedom Award went to transgender actress Harmony Santana, who made quite a splash in her debut performance in “Gun Hill Road.”

Ben Bonenfant, the star of “Strapped,” and Sarah Stouffer, the young star of “Bloomington,” shared the award for Outstanding Emerging Talent.

Spanish director Jesus Garay was given the Outstanding Artistic Achievement for his work on “Eloise’s Lover.”
