Brilliant period drama

Just seen the first quarter of this very famous Christmas story, I am not relgious at all yet I really liked it. Mine you, I had just seen Gallows Law on the BBC so I knew I was going to like it with Mr Buchan involved.

I hope others enjoyed it as much as I did.

The best films are made in an intelligent format.

I'm enjoying watching it too.

Yes. All religious teachings take it for granted that Joseph, and Mary's parents - never mentioned in the bible as I recall - accepted the notion of the immaculate conception without question. It's a neat idea to have them express some doubt as to her fidelity.

"Immaculate Conception" is a Roman Catholic doctrine that states that Mary was conceived & born without the stain of Original Sin, and has little do with the Biblical claim of the Virgin Birth of Jesus Christ.
I don't know of any "religious teachings" that "take it for granted that Joseph, and Mary's parents...accepted" either "notion."
To say that "all religious teachings" do is quite an overstatement!
Even Jewish, Muslim, Hindu, Buddhist, etc., etc...?
Even those that have nothing to do with Jesus Christ, Mary, Joseph, etc.?
Also, by your wording and punctuation, you seem to indicate that you believe that the Bible states that Joseph himself immediately accepted Mary's claims regarding her own virginity, The Annunciation, etc., without question.
However, the Bible indicates otherwise:
“Now the birth of Jesus Christ took place as follows – after his mother Mary was betrothed to Joseph, but before they came together, she was found to be with child of the Holy Spirit. Then her husband Joseph, being a righteous man, and not wanting to expose her to public disgrace, had in mind to send her away quietly. But while he thought about these things, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream saying, ‘Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take to you Mary as your wife, for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit. She will bring forth a son, and you shall call his name Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins.’”
Matthew 1:18-21
And finally, to the user who started this thread, the expression is "mind you," not "mine you."
Merry Christmas!

Completely agree. This is a fantastic adaptation, with a few different twists on the story which really add to it. Mary and Herod are perfectly cast, it's great to watch. Its also nice to see Peter Capaldi, one of my favourite actors, in a completely different role than the one he's famous for!
I think people, even when not religious, can really deeply understand and feel the references it still has for people today.
