Why is everyone an ahole to Lynn?

Everyone in her family was an ahole to her and I can't figure out why. I was watching it while I was working so did I miss an explanation why everyone pretty much loathed her?

Who Cares.

I think it's because Lynn is the one who made something out of her life. Lynn moved to the city while the rest is stuck in no man's land. You notice that the 'others' have no general knowledge and are very small minded. The way they deal with situations like Elliot putting on make up to hide his addiction and they thinking that he is a cross-dresser or gay is ridiculous. Even if he was one of those or both. Why should that be an issue anyway? The rest of the family does not believe in therapy and think its all *beep* Especially grandma. That's why I think the 'breakfast conversation' between grandma and Elliot is brilliant. Elliot puts things in perspective for his grandma and its obvious she can not handle the truth. Elliot is the one who in the end stands up for his mom several times. Unfortunately Lynn never sees it, because Elliot is so damaged that even when he does something good he will not show it to the ones who he truly loves. Also people like Bonnie thinking that Alice's 'cutting' is a trend? Come on. Next to that I also think that Lynn has it financially better, otherwise she was not able to provide therapy for all her children. People always cast you out if they think you have a better life than they have.

When Lynn is humiliated by her parents who take Paul's side, she drags herself outside and drops to the ground, crying, exhausted. Her son Elliot sits beside her and she reaches for him for solace. I got the feeling this wasn't the first or only "rescue" he performed for his mom.

Sadly some people are just treated that way, pushed away and left to suffer in silence....

I Sympathise with Lars Von Trier.
