Confused?

The difference between Paul beating up Lynn and basically being kowtowed by Patty is seriously confusing to me. Aren't men who are abusive in one relationship not usually the type to be in another relationship where they are dominated? When he tells Alice he can't go to lunch without his wife is that just an excuse so he doesn't have to deal with the past of how he treated her mother?
