Ending

In the end ... is he leaving for good?

reply

Dont think so, it was more about her accepting that "I'll see you tonight" doesnt always mean "I'm off for good, take care of the kids!"

reply

Well, it's a bit confusing, giving some of the prior sequences, i would expect that her line was more in the way of her accepting the possibility that he would not return. And the path he takes after that (the forest path that looks a lot like the one he took the detective on) and the last image in the mist leads to this kind of conclusion - although i don't like the idea.

reply

Well, the 72 will be out for blood and he won't put his family in harm's way. So there's only 2 paths, stay and protect them or go out and get rid of the 72 (because they'd come after his family even if he's gone). It's clearly option 2, and his wife uses the phrase as a hopeful good-bye.

Just saw the movie and I was about to ask the question here.
But I think it's her who is gonna leave Liu, if it really meant that, not the other way round.
Or it could be just a simple 'I'll see you tonight'. Nothing more, nothing less.

To me it was about trust. She lost he trust when her first husband left her after saying it, for her to say it to him is about acceptance.

If you have any questions about this movie, just compare it History of Violence. At the end of HoV, the family hesitantly accepted Joey in a similar fashion.

I believe it means she trusts he'll return. I don't think it's because he's leaving to go fight the 72 demons... cause the only person that really wanted him back was his father... all the others said he was dead to them anyways after he cut off his arm. So, it's a happy ending :)

reply

I think she believes that he will come back. He chose his family over the 72 Demons. That's why he but off his arm. I don't think the 72 Demons want him back either. I agree it was only the father. What I want to know is who is Kara Hui to him? Stepmom? Mom? What? Also, I think he is on his way to work in the end. I want to know what they told the townspeople. How are they going to accept him?

reply

I was going to ask the same question. At first it looks like he's going to go work in the field, but keeps walking....

reply

It's clearly designed to be an open-ended conclusion, but my money is on him returning. The Master's gone, he's given an arm and the detective has given his life to enable him to stay.
