hollywood budget, but not what i was expected from mister Yen

We all like traditional chinese kung-fu movies, for example Project A, 13 Assassins, Drunken Master, Ip Man 1 or the beautifull and philosoffical Hero and not the big budget and cast kind of hong kong blockbuster (ex:The Forbidden Kingdom), so mister Yen, if you are reading this, please stay chinese, don't try to became occidental and mercantillistic, you will spoil exactly what we are apreciating at your films - the hong kong action-comedy-drama-dust on chick when is it hit whith a kick style :)

13 Assassins was Japanese and about samurai, not kung fu. The Forbidden Kingdom was an American film. This movie, The Monkey King, is Chinese. You, sir, are an idiot.

lmao

As much as I want to add to that comment... No need....

reply

Well people make mistakes all the time. There's no need to call others an idiot.

"claps"

anyways goddamn i'm excited for this especially after that last movie about the monkey king ending up falling pretty flat on its american ass(yes, i'm referring to forbidden kingdom).

reply

LOL I couldn't say it better. But I agree :)

Although U've got the examples wrong, U've got the feeling right.
Donnie Yen's Monkey King gave me the feel of a production aimed at kids straight from the 80's.
I mean, the costumes and CGI are pathetic at best, not even laughable (to my taste).
The acting is somewhat theatrical. Nobody feels real or 'human' enough - I know, I know, most roles are non-human - but I won't need to explain here why only human-like characters, whether they should be in fact animals, demons or gods, will stir our sense of identification and capture the interest and emotions of the audience.

I actually had no problem to forget about The Forbidden Kingdom flaws and was carried away by the story and acting.
I consider it a more than decent movie and will re-watch it when the occasion comes.
In this Monkey King, I was too busy criticising to even get into the plot. It passed beside me, hidden by exaggeratedly lousy special effects I would have found retro already 15 years back.

my rating- 4 out of 10 - pretty bad, not worth a re-watch.

the forbidden kingdom was awful, the effects in this are pretty well used for a lot of chinese films and was a hell of a lot better than that whitewashed piece of crap FK, i was hopeful with Jackie and jet but then they used an american boy as the main. awful.
Yen shows a different side of his acting in this one.
