Even Billy seemed more distraught over the whole thing than she did. What's up with that? Why keep it if she didn't really care?

I thought it weird too that there was no follow up, she was basically assaulted which caused her to lose the baby...so I wanted to see Mr Creeper get his!

No one can judge the depth of emotion in others; hysteria is no proof.

Not all women become hysterical. Not all women "carry on to get attention" or even have a desire for "attention" from others; private people need to grieve in private, and Martha is a very private person. She would rather be left alone than try to explain.

Some people feel things so deeply that they can't display emotions.

Remember the wonderful line in Emma, when Mr. Knightley said, "Maybe, if I loved you less, I could talk about it more."

Martha's quiet and self-controlled reaction was completely normal; and made more so by her lack of cheap hysteria.

When she "didn't know what to do," and went in circles, holding her stomach, then sat on the steps, silently leaning against Clive, was so powerful that Niamh finally understood and backed away.

Her allowing Clive to "hold her" when she returned to work, was a "good-bye" to what could have been.

She was VERY moved by the loss of her baby. It was all there!

They did seem to brush it off quick, as if she went home with the sniffles or an upset stomach and was back at work the next day? I would have thought something like that would have been a few days in the hospital plus counselling etc.

Re her coming back to work the next day, it depends on how far the pregnancy was. Within the first couple of months, a miscarriage, as sad as it is, can feel like a very heavy period and wouldn't need hospital treatment. I am guessing this is the case. And Martha as a character would want to be at work to help her forget.

What made you think that? I saw it very differently because:

- she chose to continue the pregnancy which shows some "bother" wouldn't you say?

- a few times, she was shown resting her hands on her belly, which many pregnant women do as a gesture of protection and nurture and bonding.

- she told Clive that everything was not going to be "fine" when she could feel the baby dead or dying inside of her.

- she was shown crying in front of work colleagues (Natalie Dormer's character)

- upon her return, she showed an uncharacteristic vulnerability when she slumped in Clive's arms.

Distraught in what way? Did he go to the hospital with her, take time off of work, lessen his case load, take over some of her case load, legally attack the man whom attacked her and killed their baby, get obsessive about it all?

I thought he never skipped a beat. He maintained his work and was back to flirting rather quickly.

So again, what are you talking about?

Why keep it if she didn't really care?

She didn't display enough suffering for your tastes?

And, how young, inexperience and naive do you have to be to think that women continue pregnancies because they care? There are a myriad of reasons why that happens and caring is only one of them.

Learning about women as if they are actual, whole, complex and unique people may help improve your ability to perceive or to assess in ways which include accuracy and fairness.

Martha made it clear in her facial expressions, gestures, and introspection after the loss of her baby that she not only mourned her baby's loss but was also afraid that was her last chance at motherhood. Any time children or mothers or her age were mentioned, you could see it in her reactions.
Getting immediately back to work was her way of dealing with it. There's nothing worse than sitting around staring at the walls when you're in mourning.
