My guess for the delayed release...

I know that one of the producers said they're waiting to find the right release date, but my guess for the delayed release has to do with 3 out of the 4 cast members having high-profie releases coming out in the next few months...

Chris Pine has This MEans War- not really too high profile, but more of a test of his abilit to carry a film

Michelle Pfeiffer has Dark Shadows- a highly touted reunion with Tim Burton, not to mention a much anticipated film in its own right...

Elizabeth Banks has The Hunger Games- based on the bestselling book series and What to Expect when you're Expecting- an all star film adaptation...

Dark Shadows n The Hunger Games will more than likely be hits while This Means War and What to Expect When You're Expecting both stand a good chance of turning a profit...i'm thinkin that the producers r hoping to ride on the coat tails of their cast's other films to help bolster the chances of welcome to ppl succeeding at the box office...

A.R Rahman said in an article he thinks its being released early next year so we'll need to wait and see. Dreamworks haven't actually announced release dates for any of their films next year yet.

hmm, sounds hopeful!!

Early next year sounds great. That would bridge the Michelle Pfeiffer-less gap between New Year's Eve and Dark Shadows for me. Hopefully we get a release date and a trailer etc soon. Fingers crossed.

Also, the year-end 2011 field was already crowded with prestige films that were expected to garner strong critical favor, namely, Ides of March, The Artist, The Descendants, Moneyball, My Week With Marilyn, Hugo, War Horse, Incredibly Loud and Extremely Close and Young Adult, among others. It seems smart then for Dreamworks to target a Fall 2012 release for WTP, provided they believe it has serious awards potential. If not, then it could also do well as counter programming to the commercial blockbusters that dominate the Spring and Summer release schedules.

Not having read the screenplay, I can only surmise that WTP will be more of a performance / character driven film. Not sure if it will be considered good enough to be emerge as a 2012 Best Film contender or not. It would however be very cool if they felt it was good enough to merit a competing slot at Cannes next year.
