Is this movie about incest?

Not that it matters but it kinda looks that way or at least they kinda fall for each other. There is this 'mystery' in the trailer when Olivia says "So have you told her yet?" I wonder what that is going to be about.

Just curious because some similar experience happened to me and stuff like this could happen. But it wasn't a family member of mine.

reply

Yes.

reply

No, the movie is not about incest.

Whatever, but I've seen the movie.

reply

Then you didn't pay much attention, because the movie isn't remotely about incest. It brushes over it slightly but it is nowhere near the main subject matter.

reply

Yeah, incest is not a strong theme, though that is the line Sam is walking by not telling Frankie the truth while he continues to bond with her and her son; there is a moment where Frankie starts to express her feelings for Sam just before he finally tells her the truth.

And, btw, the movie strains credibility a bit when, after Sam says he "won't ever hit on") Frankie, she doesn't really question what his interest is until later on, and then not very forcefully. Then I guess she forgets what he said earlier and thinks his interest in her is romantic after all.

Yes, the sister reacts violently when she finds out "great guy" is her half brother. Sister had romantically fallen for half-brother without physical contact. When half-brother finally told the truth, half-sister felt humiliated.

reply

Not at all. At one point Sam even says to her, "Trust me, I would NEVER hit on you" and then tells her he is in a relationship. He is just trying to figure out who this sudden sister and nephew are and why his dad seemed to care about them enough to leave them a bunch of money when all he got were some records. He expects to dislike Frankie and her son because he is trying to justify keeping them money for himself and is surprised to realize his sister is a good person and his nephew is a boy struggling to fit in who really needs someone like him in his life. We, of course, know that Frankie is going to interpret all this interest and the time they are spending together in the wrong way. And that is what forces Sam to finally tell her he is her brother. But there is never more to their relationship then that. This movie is about discovering yourself and what ties you to the people who are your family.

reply

Yeah.. right!

lol

reply

Silver, are you kidding? How old are you? The movie is not about incest, not even remotely about it.

reply

And how old are you?

reply

No. The 1/2 siblings do not sleep together. She does become attracted to him and it's then he tells her who he really is. He is just this handsome stranger who is nice to her and takes an interest in her troubled son (his nephew). I just saw a preview and although it was a bit long, I liked it.

Yes, sir, I'm going to do nothing like she's never been done before!

reply

I have only seen the trailer, so I don't know for sure, but my guess is no. I think it is just about two people who find each other during a rough time in their lives. Both of them need some type of pick up or enlightenment, and they are both able to offer that for one another. I can't see their relationship being sexual. If it was this film would be rated R, and not PG-13. Also, I don't think it would be getting such a mainstream release.

reply

If only this movie was truly mainstream release. The only places this movie will be seen is in the USA (29 June) and later in Argentina and Hungary. According to IMDb there are no release dates for the UK (although some UK websites have been covering press releases etc on this movie), Canada, Australasia, Europe etc. This is a really big WTF moment.

reply

I guess I meant to say a mainstream US release. My main point was that if this film was truly about incest it would not be getting such a big, or relatively big, release. In the US it has been heavily advertised, and I don't think it would be if it were about incest. Also, I don't think this is getting a big release, or a release, in Europe because it isn't the type of US movie that does well over seas. Big budget action movies, like Battleship, is what does well over seas.

Recent case in Germany -- adopted siblings met as adults and had four kids together, only one of whom was healthy. The man was sent to jail. The woman is mentally ill or defective or something so she didn't have to go to jail.

This kind of movie would not do well in other countries, like the English speaking and parts of Europe? Really? I don't think that is true at all.

To Danusha Goska - Why was the man sent to jail? I assume that neither of them knew that they were siblings.

This is a very good reason why adoption records should be open and available. It is the responsibility of both birth and adoptive parents to be available for those children and for the children to have access to the whole truth (as far as known) as to their biological heritage.

What People Like Us could allude to is the awful implications of these two people, Sam and Frankie, meeting without either of them knowing that they are half-siblings and forming a full-on sexual relationship with the possibility of children being the result. I don't know the full story, but I would think that both Sam and Frankie have every right to be angry at the parents.

It's more likely that half-siblings of sperm donors would meet by chance, since there are potentially a lot more of them. But I have no idea how someone would access that information. I don't even think individual clinics offer the information, though that's not something I've ever researched.

Does a donor dad get to be selected by as many customers as possible, or does each clinic limit the number of times that person's genes can be passed along? I've read of a couple cases over the years where clinics let the same guys donate repeatedly because their criteria were favored by customers. Those kids should probably start a club, if only to tell their own jokes and have some pot lucks.

Here's the info. about the German siblings who had four children. Three of the children had severe health issues.

"Patrick Stuebing is a man living in Leipzig, Germany, who has recently been the centre of a heated debate around incest, due to his relationship with his biological sister, Susan Karolewski, since 2001. The relationship has so far produced four children: Eric, Sarah, Nancy, and Sofia. Sofia, the only healthy child, remains with the couple. The older two children suffer from severe physical and mental disabilities. The third child was born with a heart condition but is healthy after undergoing a heart transplant. All three were placed in foster care."

I have a friend who was adopted from central america at the same time as her twin brother by two different families; very unlikely but surprisingly ended up in the same little midwestern town and got married and had 3 kids (whom I met) who were a little bit off, with some slower speech development and emotional sensibility, but overall good kids.
They find out about themselves and had to separate.

reply

YES. It IS about incent. SMOKING HOT SEXY STUFF.

Does THAT answer your question?

reply

LOL! :-)) yeah, sometimes the irritation factor gets to you, doesn't it. Loved the reply!

Incest does not happen. Incest is sexual intercourse between relations. That never happens in the film.

Good heavens - I guess you didn't see it. NO, it is NOT about incest. At ALL. It's about love in its purest form - love for another person and wanting what is best for THAT person. It is about sacrifice. It is about giving of oneself. And there is absolutely NO romantic love story in here. None.

The film is brilliant. I highly recommend it.

@dbh850 I have to disagree with you that "And there is absolutely NO romantic love story in here. None."

True, Chris Pine's character has no romantic interest in Elizabeth Bank's character...but Elizabeth Banks clearly has a sexual/romantic interest in Chris Pine. To me, that makes it--at least somewhat--a story of one-sided romantic love.

Here's a novel thought, Armando, Why not go and see the movie for yourself instead of letting other people dictate your opinion to you. Who knows, you might even enjoy it!.

reply

The idiot should have been upfront about being a relative. Why would you even allow for such a possibility where your half sis could fall for you because she doesnt know how you are related. He still could have maintained his distance by not disclosing the money right away. Or he could have lied and said he was a cousin.
