Great potential wasted on bad young leads

It is rare that the older leads in a movie are much more attractive than the younger ones, but such is the case in this movie. Almost everything in this movie is perfect: the beautiful cinematography, the sweeping music and the top-notch performances by veteran actors like Dukakis, Quinn and Madsen. Unfortunately, this movie is ruined by the young leads, who are totally unappealing, un-engaging and un-adorable. Every time Zosia Mamet appears, it makes me cringe and my skin crawl all over, LOL. There are so many other better young actresses like Elle Fanning who could easily have helped make this film 10 out of 10 stars.

I just found the casting odd. Zosia does not look like anyone else in her family. At least cast someone not so fair skinned to be her mother to make it beleiveable. I honestly was wondering if there was a sub plot about her being adopted or something like she was the last keeper and everyone in her family were actually her guardians / protectors but no.

And the prophecy basically said that hse was not the important one - her kid would be so in a way it made her seem like a throw away character because of that.

I didn't find the younger leads to be that bad but I think they just did not have much to work with. Zosi's character, the boy friend and basically everyone else at their school seemed like a Mary Sue type character - pretty mich perfect and no really flawed characteristics to play off. Even the popular kids with the attitude problems did not seem that bad - with the exception of the ex scowling at her and at one point an unnamed student throws something at her while she is picking up trash.

I agree, the younger characters' casting was odd, Zosia bore no resemblance to the family, and her acting abilities were so ropey that it all stank of nepotism/insider connections that got her the part -- her dad is director David Mamet, so she's an industry kid with connections.

That makes a lot of sense actually.

It's a pity if it's true, though, isn't it...

That girl's performance was so meh, that I looked her up specifically to find out who she is and why on earth she would be cast -- and there was the famous dad in her bio!

Happens, though.

I thought the actors all did the best they could. The script fell flat at times, and the plot wasn't exactly original. It was one of those movies you watch on a Sunday afternoon.

So you blame this girls appearence for scoring only 5 out of 10, where almost ANY actress (to your opinion) could have made it at least a 7 out of 10? Get real.

This story is just dull. It starts off with the ending (hence we get to know she does have the gift of vision) AND see she has the power of healing.

Her abilities hardly ever come to make adifference, are never portrayed spectacular, nor used in a fun or wicked way. All the family does is make art, never anything to make it spicier, unless ofcourse we take in account the candle lighting without matches. Witch (lol) in the end is pure laziness.

The lovestory is not broken because she has powers (I would be like WTF!? if a girl demonstrated these powers, not like "oh, that's cool, now I love you more") but because there was a doll on fire. As she just found out herself she is in fact a witch (or whatever you like to call it) there is little reason to have action take place so fast.

Then there is the moment of change, and instantly she is the love interest of this cool dude, who breaks up with that one girl without saying anything. To top that they are on touchy feely base instantly. If not a witch, she is a who'..!

To stop the rant and make my point: Everything you said about the lead may be right, but any other choice would still deliver a mediocre at best movie. Elle Fanning or not...

Zosia Mamet does a credible job in the film. The fact that her father, David Mamet is a very famous film director (State and Main, Glengarry Glen Ross), playwright, and screenwriter, so it's not unusual for someone growing up in a movie-maker's family to be very familiar with the process of making a film. On IMDb she is quoted as saying that she loved growing up living on sets while her dad made his movies.

I never noticed that she "couldn't come from that family". Zosia is an attractive young woman with obvious talent. For you, maybe she just hasn't found the "right" role yet, but she's definitely on the path to it.

E pluribus unum
