Hell on Earth was just too glossy for me, but still better than the "toss Pinhead into an unrelated script" Deader and Hellworld. Hellseeker is the movie that Inferno should have been, especially considering that the "twist" in each was so similar, but Inferno had some superior plot devices. Imagine for a second if the better parts of both those films had been combined and that the detective in Inferno had been Kirsty's husband. Keep the best cenobites/kills from each and nix Inferno's preachy ending. I could have really gotten behind that. Either way, Revelations looks like nothing better than a moderately well-financed fan film from the trailer I saw. I will see it once for morbid curiosity reasons alone, but I likely won't be buying it to add to my Hellraiser DVD collection.

I assumed Revelations would fit between Hell on Earth and Hellworld, because I couldn't imagine anything sucking harder than Hellworld... but then I saw the trailer... and I fear Revelations might steal the spot on the bottom of the list.

I too find it difficult to believe that there could be a worse Hellraiser movie than Hellworld, but as mentioned, Revelations could be the one, I'll reserve judgment until I see the whole thing.

reply

Why do all of you think Hellworld suck? I loved it (for a Hellraiser flick)! It was creepy and straight and to the point, unlike some of the lesser entries "reality jump" mumble jumble.

reply

Because under no circumstances should a Hellraiser film ever contain a round house kick.

The Titanic sinks, Bruce Willis is a ghost, and Henry is the killer.

I personally loved 1,2 and 6, which make a good trilogy.

The only ones I disliked where Bloodline and Deader, and this new Revelations judging by the trailer.

Well, they did it, they actually, somehow managed to make a Hellraiser movie worse than Hellworld. Revelations is beyond boring, beyond AWFUL.

Revelations, to me, was the first sequel since Hellbound that was actually a Hellraiser movie, and not an attempt to either take the series into a conventional horror dimension at the expense of its characters ("Hell on Earth" and "Bloodline") or an unrelated movie with a blatantly shoehorned-in Cenobite plot (pretty much every other sequel).

Inferno was the next closest for me because the cop is the closest the series comes to another Frank, and the plot-- ultimately about a morally bankrupt man whose quest for the extreme lands him more than he bargained for-- is the closest the series got to the original mythos.

I disliked Hell on Earth for turning Pinhead into an actual demon (as opposed to a morally depraved entity beyond human understanding) but I liked that there was some elaboration upon his backstory, and I enjoyed Bradley's performance as Elliot Spencer.

Hellseeker only gets listed as high as it does for managing to bring back Kirsty. This is kind of a cheat entry since I'm really giving it points for the deleted scene on the DVD that revisits the events of the first two films. Had it not been for that, this would be ranked lower.

Deader had the potential to be one of the better sequels, but the final half hour of the movie kills it as the director and writer make it quite obvious they had no idea what the hell they were doing or where to take anything, completely wasting all the nice buildup to that point. If they had spent near as much time on polishing up the script and making it clear what the Deaders were hoping to accomplish, why they had the powers they did, and why it was necessary for the reporter to open the box for them, as they had on the gore train, I might have been able to have ranked this higher.

Hellworld, like Deader, was shaping up to be one of the better sequels, and I really enjoyed the metareference, "Hellraiser meets Scream" style of the first half hour or so. But like Deader, the movie just falls apart in the final act and the fact that this was not originally a Hellraiser script becomes very, very obvious.

And finally, Bloodline... what can I say? It has the elements that made me hate Hell on Earth (demon Pinhead, world domination plot) but none of its redeeming qualities, coupled with the ridiculous sci-fi plot, the convoluted "Hell's re-org" subplot, randomly injected Cenobites, sloppy editing, and the list just goes on. Easy to see why this one killed the franchise (it was the last in theaters, after all), but hard for me to understand how anyone can rank it higher than the bottom of the pile.

reply

I rank them:

1) Hellbound (I just love this one the most; especially the theme)
2) Hellraiser
3) Inferno (it was a breath of fresh air after the third and fourth- also I hadn't seen Jacob's Ladder yet, so the ending tripped me out)
4) Hellworld (I liked it)
5) Deader (I liked it, but not as much as Hellworld)
6) Hellseeker (yeah, it had Kirsty, but it was just a rehash of Inferno)
7) Bloodline (I just can't hate this movie)
8) Hell on Earth (same as Bloodline, but it was way off)
9) Revelations (only because it didn't have Doug Bradley- if he was in it, it would probably be above Hellseeker).

Revelations is one otf the wrost movie ever.
Hellworld is a stupid but fun movie, not a very good movie, but MORE BETTER than Revelations

reply

More better? But no, there is NOTHING fun about hellworld. Revelations has a lot of faults but it also has a solid Hellraiser narrative, and was ruiend by lack of time/money. Hellworld had more budget and time but was an awful abomination,m an insult to fans of intelligent horror. It was a mess with massive plot holes which render the film pointless, a twist that cheats, Pinhead decapitating someone, and characters with no personality, and stupid so-called humour. It's an insult to Hellraiser, as compared to Revelations which clearly had a lot of good intentions that were sabotaged.

I second your comments about each film.
Anyways I enjoyed Bloodlines a bit more than Inferno. Also, Revelations was surprising even with that low budget and crappy production.

Hellworld just sucked, that was BAD as HELL, heck I think it took me like like 4 days to watch it cause I always ended up asleep.
