Horror buffs know this ISN'T that bad...

I've you rate movies like I do (and I think most people should) then you should only rank a film against it's peers. I would never say this is a good movie compared to things like The Godfather, or Wreck-It Ralph or Jurassic Park etc. But against other horror films? It's not that bad.

Sure the original Pinhead is missing, and it was filmed in 2 weeks, and on a 300k budget (which I thought they made use of VERY well), but at least it had what I've come to expect from Hellraiser films: gore, rough sex, and the puzzle box appropriately tied into the story. I felt Revelations at least honored the Hellraiser spirit.

If you're going to flame me for what I've said, ask yourself these questions first...Have I watched Mr Jingles? Have I watched The Graveyard? Have I watched Blood Reaper? Have I watched The Howling 3/7? I really could go on listing more horror films FAR worse than this one.

Regardless, if you answered 'no' to the above questions, I really don't think you have the basis for comparison to call this a bad horror movie.

"Well...I've seen enough. Come on Charlie, we're going home."

I disagree. I have a massive, massive horror collection, and have seen (endured) all of those films you mentioned (which are all terrible, yes, especially Children....). I consider myself a bit of a horror buff of all decades and genres, and yes am a big Hellraiser fan. I still think Hellraiser 1-8 is a fine horror series.

Revelations though wasn't just a bad movie, it was a slap in the face (it's part 9 and only fans will bother with this one, right?) and a massive disappointment made only for greedy reasons, and it shows. You list some good points. It had the Hellraiser ingredients (the gore, the rough sex, the puzzle box) and the storyline is certainly Hellraiser-esque, no doubt. The potential certainly was there for a decent little entry into the Hellraiser canon.

No matter how you cut it, re-casting Pinhead was a terrible move that doomed this film from the start. The guy, Stephen Collins, gave a terrible performance, bad line delivery, nowhere near the same league as Doug Bradley. If the filmmakers were smart, they would have excised Pinhead altogether and came up with another cenobite.

The acting from all involved reeked of no prep and amateur hour. The actors playing Nico and Steven (especially Nico) were awful in every respect of the word.

Did the storyline have potential? Sure, but as it stands this movie came across as a super cheap fan-made Hellraiser film with better than average effects. The script needed a serious polish and the film looks like crap. The movie simply comes across as cheap and amateurish from all angles: cinematically, dialogue wise, story, script, acting, everything. Just cheap.

When stacked against superior horror films, whether the straight to video sequels like Wrong Turn 2 or theatricals like Insidious or even modern horror like the Babadook, this movie is a bad, bad joke. I know that's just a small decade, but this film simply isn't worth thinking or typing about much longer.

Just my opinion.

I enjoyed it. The only issues people seem to have is NO DOUG BRADLEY and ONLY MADE TO RENEW THE FRANCHISE LICENSE. Like that's never happened before, X-MEN: FIRST CLASS comes to mind. Recasting Doug was bound to happen in the eventual reboot anyway, so all this film did was give you a taste of what's yet to come.

If one must recast Doug Bradley, then select a good actor. Stephen Collins was terrible. Ugh. No one can tell me he was good at all with a straight face. The faux Brit accent was brutal.

I have lots of issues with this one. Those two reasons, yes. But it's a bad storyline. Nothing more than a retread of old elements. Inferno and Hellworld tried new things and they were entertaining. They looked like well made films as well.

Revelations had awful production values. None of the actors were any good. The homeless guy who gives the box in Mexico? Blech.

The storyline was a cheap rehash of Hellraiser, with soap opera worthy family drama. The film also looked like crap. Bad directing and DOP. The script needed a serious polish. Taking the found footage route at the beginning just screamed cheap and tacky.

The only PLUS I will give is the effects weren't bad. The cenobites looked aight but no creativity. I mean, Pseudo Pinhead?

Revelations simply lacked in all departments. No thought, originality, passion, or professionalism was put in this film at all and the results show it. Hellraiser and horror fans know this because the reception alone speaks volumes.

I hope the inevitable reboot/remake puts this great series back on track.

I find the whiny-ness of all of DB's fanboys to be what's lacking in common sense here. I found the effects to be very good, & although no hellraiser sequel/prequel will ever out-do "Hellbound's" plot, "Revelations's" plot comes in a close 2nd place for me. & before all of you sheople ask, I've seen all of the hellraiser movies.
Update
If I want your opinion, I'll GIVE it to you.

If you re-read what I had stated, I gave a plus for the FX work. I won't take anything away from that.

The rest is awful.

Isn't the Homeless Man supposed to be the Devil or something? I liked that the Homeless Man with the Puzzle Box showed up again.

I kind of liked it. It felt the closer to the original two than all of the later sequels which to me is a good thing. I think that if Doug Bradley played Pinhead then people would think it was one of the best sequels rather than one of the worst. It wasn't nearly as bad as people say.

I definitely think Doug Bradley's absence is what a lot of people hold against this film. It's more Hellraisery than some of the sequels. Inferno, for example, was a film about a corrupt cop that had a Pinhead cameo. That was stupid.

I think for a low-budget Hellraiser film, this would've worked, it just missed it's original lead. Whereby some of the earlier sequels wasted the fact that they had him.

It was offensive for hellraiser, he was first of all so fat, he spoke like a kid with some mental disorder and too much and too soft, the main actor could not carrie the film, sorry bra, but The Howling doesnt have a name as big as Hellraiser, you would need to compare it to Freddy, Jason, TCM, etc. Hellraiser is too big for this sheit, (use the Howling for comparissons to movies like Feast for example, howling is not big enough) so, I never thought I would say this, but this hellraiser movie was far worse than A Nightmare on Elm Street THE REMAKE! Hellraiser needs to be respected, is offensive to shoot it on 300k budget anyway, and if you do, then go all the way, not just half way, it wasnt cruel enough, the last shot was beyond stupid, the little respect I had for the climax went out the window the moment the blond girl also the worst actor of the bunch had a CU of her face smiling, was beyond stupid, like there is another dimension of stupidity with no boundries, thats how far it went. I have watched Manos the hands of faith, more entertaining than this. I felt this felt independent, I felt that even Hellworld was so much more amazing and had one of the craziest deaths and that was hell of an ending even if the movie was not good, in the case of this one, the movie is plain bad, you just want it to end and dont know when it will, you want to fast forward it but you dont want to disrespect pinhead, then you notice he got a lot of weight and his voice sounds retarded. And if we followed you, then a movie like ¨It follows¨ would have a 9, which would be bad, since the movie is so-so, (unlike the babadook which was a flawless cinematic experience) but anyways, your arguments are all over the places, but at the end of the day bare no logic, you are using a fallacy to open, many ones trying to defend yourself, if u felt u were right u wouldnt use these fallacies at all.
