Yes we're at Peak Oil now, but there are several other hybrid technologies, & renewable energies being developed at present. The real root of the problem is finite resources being consumed by an ever expanding population. If we don't
start moving people off World to other planets, the Moon, space stations, etc...
Overpopulation will cause a collapse all by itself.

Mankind is VERY wasteful at present, another gigantic problem not being addressed by Jared Diamond, & National Geographic. Tesla had solved mankind's energy dilemma too, but the energy barons buried his research due to the fact
there was no way they could have massive profits from it. Just do some research
on The WardenClyffe Tower, & Schumann resonances to learn more about what he was working on before he died.
