Gloves

Not to sound stupid, but what was with the gloves? Was it ever explained?

reply

No, its not explained in the movie.
My bet is that they do not wanna touch anything in the "outside" world. They are both very humanistic and selfreflective and touching smth with your hands is a very sensitive action. They want to keep it that way so they only touch each other or stuff that is very important to them. Like Books or instruments. Ava has gloves probably only because of style

Thank you for your reply SaberRider85!
the bible was written by rich people to stop poor people from beating them with sticks

The gloves are a very old tradition.

Well. in general vampires' fingers are a bit out of the ordinary (a bit claw like), so the gloves would be to cover this up.

But particularly i think that the 'touch' in this movie can also be seen as a metaphor for hypersensitivity (particularly with Eve). If everything you touch gives you an intense emotional response you would want to avoid that most of the time.

When Eve first arrived at Adams home she asked "may I? " in regards to removing her gloves. He removed them and placed them with a larger pair of black gloves, which we can assume are his.
Now when she touched Adam for the first time she seemed to really enjoy it in an overtly sexual way.
Later when Adam asks Eve about his guitar she is able to tell him it was a 1905 Gibson and that his dress gown was much older. Again she seemed to get an empathic enjoyment out of it.
So I would say that touching items and people allows them to feel everything that the item has been through or a person is feeling.
That would also explain the enthusiastic look on Eve Adam and Kits face when they consume blood. If touching a guitar makes her moan the blood must be like a emotional heroin.

My husband reminded me that gentry used to wear gloves all the time. I had forgotten that.

According to an interview with Jim Jarmusch and Tilda Swinton, vampire mythology is additive. For instance, fangs first appeared in the 1950's; having to be invited in, the sunlight, etc. These have all been myths that have accumulated over time. Jarmusch stated he wanted to add his own mythology to vampire lore and came up with the gloves.

Eve at least demonstrates the powers of psychometry. She's able to determine the age of an object by touching it.

Presumably, in addition to covering up the pallor of their skin from the human world, the gloves prevent them from seeing something that their host wouldn't appreciate them knowing.

Being invited in (by a vampire) was in Bram Stoker's Dracula novel: When Harker arrives, the Count says, "Enter freely of your own will and leave some of the happiness you bring."

Ahhh...makes sense. I wondered, because they seemed to act as though it was part of vampire lore, but I couldn't find anything on Google.
