Well, yes and no. Yes because it is a show made for 90% entertainment. An actual documentary might show a more balanced portrayal and aim for education, but a tv show on animal planet is going more for the drama of the show.
No, because the people they are showing ARE mostly crazy. Can a well adjusted person who just happens to love snakes make a careless mistake and be killed? Absolutely, but the majority of the people on the show share a common trait, they don't fit in well with people and they feel a stronger than normal bond with their deadly animals, to the point that they believe their pet would never harm them.
I fail to see the reason why owning tigers is any more crazy than owning venomous snakes? True the snake may not roam and run as much, but do you think a snake enjoys being couped up in a cage all day? And snakes are natural born hunters, I would imagine having a mouse hand delivered to your cage each day (or however often they eat) kind of takes away from that a little.
I also seriously doubt one is more likely to be attacked by a dog than a venemous snake. If that is true, it is just because more people own dogs and therefore the risk goes up because the occurance of owning a dog is higher. But I am sure if you compare 100 dog owners with 100 snake owners, there is much more risk for the snake owners. Also there is a difference between a dog attack and a snake attack. Sure depending on the breed a dog can do serious damage, but the majorty of dog attacks are nips and bites, they hurt a bit but nothing to send you to the hospital. But with a venemous snake, almost all bites will send you to the hospital if not the morgue. I'll take my chances with a dog.
