The young teacher - spoilers

What reception did the young teacher actually think she was gonna get going round to the house of a lawyer to tell him she thinks his daughter is pregnant.

Yeah, she probably didn't realise she was gonna get eaten, but Lord help us. She must have been pretty dumb to expect anything less than shock and anger from any parent.

A large part of me has no sympathy for this stupid woman.

reply

Because it's normal for a parent to feed a teacher to their deformed child and dogs upon notice of any bad news regarding their child whilst the other parent is unconscious and the two kids stand idly by.

reply

LOL! Certainly she couldn't have known this would happen so this is a rather stupid topic. I felt bad for her. She was just doing what she thought was best.

OF COURSE, she didn't expect to get eaten. I've already said that in my initial message.

Proof you didn't read it properly.

SO I'LL SAY IT AGAIN:

What the heck did this teacher think she was playing at going round to a parent's house telling the father she thinks his daughter is pregnant?

It's such a dumb thing to do. No teacher would do that. She should have passed her concerns onto the authorities. Obviously if she did think the girl was pregnant then the parents must have noticed too, so why bother going there?

Dumb woman. Any teacher with sense would have realised the girl's pain originated somewhere - and OBVIOUSLY IT WAS IN THE HOME.

She should have expected some angry reaction from the parents. Such a stupid woman.

Yes, we know she wouldn't have expected to be murdered, but she should have been prepared for some angry exchanges at least. Any parent would have been upset by what she was saying. ESPECIALLY since they would have noticed the baggy clothes andd 'bump'. Obviously it wasn't a normal family, despite the exterior the father was portraying.

Dumb teacher.

reply

She presumed that the daughter was made pregnant by some boy.

Normally what she had done would be considered the right move, particularly by the parents. She didn't tell the school authorities about her concerns, but came straight to them. If they'd just got Peggy an abortion, she'd have thought nothing more of it.

Normally they'd be extremely grateful that the teacher came to them with the issue so they could get it sorted out quietly. Parents who would publically criticise anyone making use of abortion will often change their minds when it is their own young daughter in trouble and the less public they can make the procedure, the better. Of course, it may be that this pregnancy is so late that they'll prefer to put the baby up for adoption, but that's something they'd probably prefer to keep quiet too.

The reason the teacher gets such an extreme reaction is because the father knows full well that what he's done could land him in trouble and is concerned about the teacher making it more widely known. He's convinced that she has already guessed about the incest, but she absolutely hasn't. (Of course, the way he talks to her lets the cat out of the bag pretty badly, so after that he definitely wasn't going to let her leave.)

She thought she was doing the daughter a favour, since the parents were clearly going to discover the pregnancy and their daughter would presumably need them to help her through it. And certainly the parents would be likely to be much less happy if they were called into the school to discuss it. The teacher was going out of her way to keep things quiet by meeting them at home.

reply

Teachers should not tell parents that they think their daughters are pregnant. That is not their responsibility. While she didn't deserve to die, she should not have gone to the house and told them.

So what should she have done, Arien? Given the girl a bus ticket to Planned Parenthood?

reply

No. Don't be sarcastic. The girl told her she was going to make things worse. If my student told me that, I'm not going to go over there. The father could have beaten her to a bloody pulp for being pregnant, or killed her. You don't just go over to someone's house and say hey, your daughter is pregnant. The teacher could have referred her to any clinic that could help her instead of just going over there against her student's wishes which is pretty stupid, even doctors aren't allowed to tell the parents if their daughter is pregnant or having sex.

I didn't know the girl had spoken to her ahead of time; I thought that was the point of the thread, in fact. Too bad she went to the nuthouse inspite of the girl's warning, then. I'm not sure I like that doctor rule; few parents are twisted enough to hurt their kids, compared to normal parents, and the government's treating kids way too much like adults. I can't even imagine some stranger offering my child an abortion without my knowledge; definitely voted against that law.

reply

Yes, she had told her when the teacher confronted her in school. The teacher said something about wanting to talk to her parents and the girl said please don't you'll only make things worse or something like that. And then the teacher came and the girl said it was not the right time or not a good time.

Offering her a bus ticket or a ride to Planned Parenthood would have been the far superior option. The girl was obviously hiding her pregnancy, if she wanted anyone, much less her parents, to know about it she would have told them herself.

A pregnant teenager is the ultimate authority on whether or not her parents are mature and level-headed enough to know about her pregnancy. For all the teacher knew, her parents could be rabid jesus junkies who would have thrown the girl out or (worse yet) kept her around and made her life even more hellish. The fact that the father turned out to be a psychopath is totally irrelevant at that point.

That's why sane states do not require parental notification for teenager's abortions. Horrible parents are one of many reasons a young woman might not choose to remain pregnant. Telling the wrong kind of parent might make it nigh impossible to exercise her rights in regard to her body.

So yeah, almost anything the teacher did would be better than running off to squeal to the parents.

"At present nothing is possible except to extend the area of sanity little by little."

reply

Exactly-you put it much better than I did. The teacher should have known what she was getting herself into. Not all parents react with consideration and would want to help their daughter out. Some parents react reasonably but other parents have worse reactions. If the girl did not want her parents to know then there was a reason for it. My dad is not like that man, but if my teacher told him I was pregnant, he would be embarrassed and call me an embarrassment/disappointment. He would also think of me as a slut because he has that sexist/conservative mentality--"boys will be boys" and if a girl has sex before she is married, then she is a slut. I was really hoping the teacher would learn her lesson, and I got more than I wished for, LOL.

reply

So what should she have done, Arien? Given the girl a bus ticket to Planned Parenthood?

That would have been the best thing for the girl actually. At Planned Parenthood, no non-employee is allowed in the exam rooms other than patient. (Her father wouldn't have been permitted in there under any circumstance.) They always ask you if you are being hurt by anyone, if you feel safe in your home. They ask if it is safe to contact you at home by phone or by mail. They have resources to get you out of an abusive situation. She would have received the best care possible whether she decided to terminate or continue the pregnancy. Beyond that, they could help her choose safe effective, and even discreet, birth control for the future -- no matter what her living situation continued to be.

It's beyond stupid for any teacher to assume a student has a loving caring supportive family. She didn't deserve to be eaten for it I suppose, since she meant well. But she was dumb to go into that house without a police liaison also. There were HUGE RED flags of abuse in place already.

reply

Exactly, I think the best thing for her to do was to first have a talk with the student; Peggy, and then arrange some kind of meeting with the highschool counselor. Let the counselor sort things out since that what they are trained and paid to do. I mean at least make sure she's actually pregnant too, right? Or call to ask permission to come by their home, not just drop by. Or ask them to drop by the school to talk with her another teacher....I mean, WTF? Jeez. She's an idiot. She didn't deserve to die like that but wow....

reply

I personally couldn't believe that the teacher was coming to their house to tell them about the pregnancy. How often do teachers make house calls these days anyways? Schools should have a procedure in place for instances like these. Just in case a kids parents are nuts just like in this movie.

reply

To the authorities? Really? Teachers where you live contact the authorities whenever they suspect a pregnancy? Wow. I guess it's different where I live, parents usually respond with gratitude when teachers go out of their way to communicate. You'd be SURPRISED at what teachers might notice and parents may not.

The teacher thought the girl's depression was from the pregnancy, I'm guessing you didn't pick it up. Whenever you see a sad kid, you can't always immediately think "WELL SHE MUST COME FROM AN ABUSIVE HOME - TIME TO CALL DA POPO".

reply

If I got pregnant and the teacher told my dad, then my dad would be really embarrassed and call me a disappointment and embarrassment, maybe also a slut. He would also disown me. So a teacher needs to know what she is getting herself into. Many girls have abortions because they are scared of what their parents might do. Some parents react calmly and reasonably, other parents react in worse ways (especially if they grew up conservative and sexist). The teacher shouldn't have presumed that all parents would react with consideration and want to help the girl out. She should have known that not all families are normal in that way and liberal. I agree with OP. Dumb teacher.

reply

in reality if you are a teacher suspect abuse or a kid needs help, you are supposed to report it to CPS or a health professional or counselor. You would NEVER go to them directly. As a geometry teacher that not your job. But they didn't have time for all that. I'm don't know all the rules but i think she might have fired/suspended for doing that. i'm sure all real teachers know never to do this!

reply

OF COURSE, she didn't expect to get eaten. I've already said that in my initial message.

Proof you didn't read it properly.

(Another old one where again, I was about to agree with the OP. But as usual they are obnoxious and wrong..) She wasn't responding to you. They were responding to starcraftbw88. You didn't read properly.

Each time I am about to agree with the OP's post the say something to make me not want to bother. Yet I will anyway.

So to the original post. Yes, she was stupid. Of course. If anything she should have called them into her office but again, you don't rat the student out to their parents. You guide the student to proper resources. Unrealistic or just a stupid character. Who knows.

Always be yourself. Unless you can be Batcatt, then always be Batcatt.

reply

No, but even most reasonable assumptions on what will happen if she told them made it seem extremely stupid for her to do so. She should have tried much harder to confront Peggy herself first, or let it go. Get better informed on the parents. Anythign but what she pulled there.

reply

She was a teacher bringing a problem to the parents' attention. Until Cleek victimizes her, she thinks it's a boyfriend of Peggy's that her parents don't know about. Keep in mind that it's Mr. Cleek who accuses HIMSELF of impregnating Peggy, Ms. Raton is understandably shocked when he says it too. Shock and anger != dragging someone out to your shed to let hungry dogs eat them.

the professional thing to do would have been tell the head, invite the parents to school. teachers are scared of the pupils these days theres no way they would go out to a strangers house anything could happen in this world though i must say i doubt any teacher even with years of experience would imagine they would be dinner for a canibal half human half dog thing!

reply

I think the teacher was making things easier for herself by just going to the parents. Bringing the parents to a meeting at the school would be more likely to lead to resentment. Let's not forget that the father seems like an efficient businessman and a cheery approachable family man, so she's not going to suspect that sort of family of involving incestuous abuse.

reply

Reagrdless of the family's crazyness, the teacher was totally wrong. She thought that her student was pregnant (an opinion based on the fact that she goes too often to the toilets and wears large jumpers...) and her first move was to tell her parents about it. What about the girl's privacy? What if the pregnancy is the result of an incest or a rape? What does she know about the parents and how they will react to it? This was really dumb. And you don't show up at a parents house without calling first just beacause the schoolgirl was missing in the morning. And you don't accept the younger brother to listen to this kind of secrets, while the mother is presumably having a nap in the kitchen...

As a professional, if you work with children and if you think that one of them has this kind of problems, you try to sort it out with the kid first, then with the school's doctor or the social services. You don't get in touch with the parents unless the teenager allows you to do it. And she was just a teacher, not a member of the social services.

Sadly Zhow, some people still believe parents should be involved in their kid's lives and wish to involve said parents before, say, the kid gets an abortion. I think she probably should have talked to the girl first, but kids can lie as well about their parents to avoid getting in trouble.

reply

Seriously spotlight, get some reason and compassion.

reply

Reason and compassion!? Coming from you that's a laugh.....!

reply

LOL You yourself haven't shown much reason.

I didn't really have much sympathy for the teacher at first either, but her motives were in the right place. My take is that her character was one of the over-eager, fresh out of college teachers that are still not cynical yet. They want to make a positive difference in the kids they teach even if they have no clue how to do it, as this teacher did. Not to mention, for some reason, these over eager newbie teachers I deal with seem to think they have some invisible armour and no one is allowed to question them. So yeah, you just don't go to a students home and announce something like that to parents no matter how much good you think you are doing. If the character had lived (and this wasn't a horror movie) she probably would have learned from her mistakes and maybe done a better job next time she comes across a student whom she thinks is in crisis.

So, that being said, this is a horror movie, not a social documentary. And the scene at the parents house is critical to the scenes that come after, as harrowing as they are to view. This teacher is not the first, or the last, character to do something stupid and end up dead. Stupidity is a staple in horror movies.

reply

I had the feeling there was some kind of lesbian relation between the daughter and the teacher. In the scene where they both sit in class talking, I tought they where going to kiss (or eat eachother out).

Also, you see the teachter finding a drawing of herself in class... possible made by the daughter.
You also see the daughter "fantasising" about her teacher when she sits at the dinner table
And you also hear the teacher saying to another teacher "she is beautiful" or something like that, when they are observing her at the sports field.

reply

I don't know why they'd call the kid beautiful, she was downright haggard.

reply

I think she expected him to thank her for giving him the news privately rather than getting people at the school involved.
