What year?

I know in another thread someone suggested that they purposely avoided pop culture references and anything else that would signify what year it took place, to give it a timeless feel. But, what year do you think the story would take place in? To me it gives off a very late 90s or early 2000s vibe.

Also, I've never read the book.

I figured it takes place now. From the music (Washed Out, Ariel Pink) to the Internet exchanges between Sutter and his ex.

"Oh, my God. Bear is driving! How can that be?!"

Director said in commentary, 2012 but wanted to avoid "dating" the movie so it could be timeless

I had a big problem with the date of the movie as well. I found it incredibly difficult to believe that people would still be receiving a newspaper every day on a paper route like that, where just about everyone on the block gets the paper.

I live in an apartment building in New York. A few years ago, there were probably a dozen apartments on my floor that got the paper. Now NO ONE does. They all read it online.

So, it was sort of timeless, or out of time. If you ignore the iMac he had, it could have been the 90s.

I want the doctor to take your picture so I can look at you from inside as well.

I picked up on that one too. No one has a tablet for their news? But I do think The Spectacular Now is supposed to be set in the here and now. 🐭
