Sutters Dad..

I believe we can all agree he was a deadbeat and a loser; but do you think he showed signs of caring? I thought he did, then because Kyle Chandler did such a great job as an actor.. i thought he really didn't care about his kid and what happens with him. He's like a drunk loser who just forgets his family and kids, and either cares.. Or doesn't care.

I could never figure out if the guy even cared, or if he did... It wasn't enough for him to show it more than he did. Seems like a guy who ran away from his problems quite often, reminds me of my Grandpa lol(seriously) lol.

Thought he was an interesting character. A guy almost showing some father like instinct but it seems more and more he was just a charmer and nothing more.

As with a lot of things about this movie, his character was realistic. Sure there were signs of his caring, but there more signs of his being what Sutter didn't want to become.

Things are rarely absolute - and I think the movie handled that very well.

Sutter's father cared for him but not in a parent kind of way. He didn't want to try to make time for his son and chose the deadbeat, drunken lifestyle instead.

reply

Heck no, Sutter's dad didn't really care f0r him at all---look how he basically stood both him and Aimee up when he claimed he was going to take them somewhere, but never came back to get them---they had to go track him down in the bar. But,yeah, all his dad cared about was getting drunk all the time. After all, they had never had a real father-to-son relationship anyway.

... proof that the apple doesn't fall far from the tree.

Really liked seeing Kyle Chandler in this role. He generally seems to play far straighter character roles and this was something different.🐭

I feel like sutters dad feels the same as sutter, that is he feels like he should save his son by not being in his life just how sutter feels like he shouldn't be in aimies life because he's bad for her. I think this is how miles teller felt they were similar in how they both shouldn't be in other people's life because they feel they're a negative influence. When stutter realises he doesn't want to end up like his dad he realises he can change himself in most ways including feeling like a negative influence.
Well that's what I thought the dads main role in the film was.

It's his mom that wises Sutter up and making him realize he's nothing like his father. The only thing they had in common was the drinking.

reply

Yeah I originally thought he might seem like a decent guy. A bad actor would have made that obvious from the start, but Chandler was great in his small role so he made the audience gain his trust and get us paying attention to him. Then he ruined it all, which proved that ultimately, he was just putting on a temporary act, until he got drunk again and just lost interest. It reminded me a bit of Mickey Rourke in The Wrestler. He appeared to really love his daughter, but if you think about his reasons for reconnecting with her, and what the script of the movie says, it turns out he really didn't care like he appeared to. Even though we really liked the guy, he was no better than the dad in this movie. And he realised it too.

I think deep down he cared for his family in a weird way but really thought they were better off without him. He was right. He was an alcoholic and had no business raising kids. He liked his booze too much to quit.

True that! Just because somebody is an alkie doesn't mean they can't think straight from time to time. I've met plenty of people that have been unable to keep their crap together and they realize what's best for all involved. Often for the better for all.

Kyle Chandler nailed this role. I am so used to seeing him in Friday Night Lights that this part really shows his versatility as an actor as disturbing the part was.
