Anyone else get taken COMPLETELY off guard when...(SPOILERS)

...the Woodley character gets hit by the car? Wow, that just kind of knocked the wind out of me. Didn't see it coming at all.

Of course. More shocked that all she had was an arm brace after that.

I even knew you were talking about the car scene before clicking on the post :)

My mouth was in the 'Whaaat?' position until we saw she was okay in the hospital.

Oh, I was shocked - everyone was shocked. It's meant to be shocking, and was filmed that way.

But that didn't mean I didn't think it wasn't coming. The whole movie had an oppressing atmosphere of dread hanging over it the entire time. This kid can't be drinking and driving the way he did without something bad happening.

I didn't like the movie because of this - I knew something bad was going to happen and couldn't wait for it to happen the whole time.

I want the doctor to take your picture so I can look at you from inside as well.

reply

Huh, I did not get that feeling at all.

Well, it's almost like a Hollywood formula. I "know" that you can't let this kid get away with drinking and driving constantly without there being some sort of karmic payback for that. Everything seemed to be going well - well, except for his father turning out to be just like him, but that isn't enough of a setback for this character. So, after about a half hour into the picture, I'm thinking, "When's it gonna happen? Let's get it over with already." I really couldn't enjoy the movie. That, and the fact that the main character is a douchebag.

I guess it seemed "indie" enough that it wouldn't follow any Hollywood formula. In any case, the way she got hit was not like anything I've seen before.

Ah, see, since I know that Shailene and Miles are big stars, to me this wasn't indie at all, but just a straight up Hollywood flick. Now, that might have happened in the 2 years since this film was released, but I just saw this yesterday, so I didn't think of it in indie terms.

Wikipedia says it had a budget of $2.5 million, so fairly indie although not microbudget.

Neither one of the leads were big stars when this film came out, so yeah, it's an indie, mainly because it didn't get major promotion, and it's not your typical high school teen movie---it's much more realistic and better than the average teen flick you usually see out of H-wood.

And, hell, yeah, that scene was shocking because I wasn't expecting anything like it at all, period. I was seriously like, "WTF!? What the hell happened?" that was crazy, for real.

reply

Yeah, that was shocking.
I thought it was gonna go the way "One Day" with Anne Hathaway went - a main character (the love interest) is killed out of the blue.
Thanks god it didn't. :)
