Kyle Chandler and Bob Odenkirk almost steal this movie...

What an amazing turn Kyle Chandler gives in this movie. He is very believable as a despicable father. He has done so much fluff I wonder if he stopped believing in his ability. If so, this small part should reinvigorate him and motivate him to look for grittier, more substantial roles, because he has the chops to handle it.

Bob Odenkirk is breathtaking as Sutter's boss. The scene where he tells Sutter he has to let an employee go and asks for Sutter's promise that he will no longer come in after drinking is just heart-wrenching. I was stunned by what he did with such a small part. On that promise I decided to watch Better Call Saul, and what a treasure that has been.

This movie is just full of small, but powerful roles. It illustrates the power that a good writer has who is fully on their game. True storytelling power comes from examining the human condition, not fireworks, not car chases, not robots, but the movement of the human heart. I so wish big studios would invest just a little in telling compelling human stories instead of making 1/4 of a billion dollar tent pole movies. Just take the budget of one of those movies and make 20 substantial movies like this one. Please.

I agree on both counts. Kyle Chandler is really talented and has great range, and I hope to see him in more roles like this. I was unfamiliar with Bob Odenkirk, but liked what I saw in The Spectacular Now. This is an interesting work in the coming-of-age genre, maybe because of its extraordinary ordinariness.
