Comments on the review by LeijonaSisu

I just read LeijonaSisu's review of 'Puhdistus' and I really need to comment on it...

LeijonaSisu: "I think I was probably the only attending person who wasn't natively 'Finnish' at the screening."

Why do you think you were the only non-native in the screening? And what difference does it make even if you were? At least I know several non-native Finns who went to see this movie.

LeijonaSisu: "Finland is currently the country that produces shock films, 'like Ford produces cars.'"

Could you list me some other recent Finnish "shock movies" that are produced like cars? And doesn't all Nordic countries produce more or less grim movies, so why would especially Finland need to concerned about some "image"?

LeijonaSisu: "It is a movie that absolutely had to have been brought to people's attention, but just as much should never have been."

What do you mean by this? I don'r really get your point.

---

And yes, I don't consider this movie a masterpiece either and I think that in order to fully understand this movie you should've read the book first. But I did enjoy this movie even though it was very sad.

I don't understand LeijonaSisu's criticism of showing suffering, violence, and prostitution... yes, movies with such subject matters are harder to watch, but I don't understand why this movie should be forgotten and why Finnish movie makers should move away from making such films.

Plus, the whole review seemed more like a criticism towards the themes of the movie rather than actual acting and cinematography of the movie (which LeijonaSisu liked). So, maybe LeijonaSisu could email Sofi Oksanen and ask her to cheer up and write happier books :)

Lol, Im glad someone has commented on that review. I have yet to see the film and came on here to check out if I had any interest in doing so. That review was the first I read and it actually made me angry.

Yeah it's a nonsense 'review'.
It's as if she doesn't believe the community ought to deal with it's traumatic past. It's a fantastic film - very well made, and a brilliant exorcism of trauma and history.

Yes, this kind of argument, that movies about sickening, grim subjects shouldn't be made because they are depressing and you'd never want to watch them again is pretty weak. Life isn't just rainbows and cupcakes, why should movies be?

Thanks, I was wondering if I should watch it since the only film I saw by director Antti Jokinen, "The Resident", was spectacularly bad. I'm a big fan of Sofi Oksanen's "Purge", though, so I'm glad you guys disagree with LeijonaSisu's review.

The thing that LeijonaSisu posted is total non sense. Yes it a thing it's not even a review or comment. I really apologize to get this personal but it's obvious. LeijonaSisu is having some personal EMIGRANT issues. There is no need to comment further. And yes it's misleading to have this crap on the front page.... OK you can leave it, at least she/he admits the spectacular acting.

Well, it is the 1st review I read too... and I totally did understand what this guy was saying. Because I felt the same.

Not about the stuff "Finland should produce" or "Finland is THE country that..." --> I do not know enough about Finland.

But what he said about this movie, that we would "forget" it, I understand.
What he said about halfway the movie is too centered on the life of the two main characters. Yes, at some point, I was almost bored.

But anyway you do realize that this guy is praising the movie right? I believe he is being absolutely honest and unbiased. I strongly disagree when you guys say its review is "nonsense". I am not saying either that the reviewer is "right" on all his arguments.

As for me, it was a random movie. I mean, I didn't know what it was about. I wasn't expecting violence (contrary to the reviewer). I didn't know the plot either.
Really, guys, pure random movie. I was surprised to hear Finnish because I didn't even know it was a Finnish movie. I was expecting English :). Okay?

Now I gave it a 7/10. But honestly I was hovering between a 5 and a 7.
Why 5? For the same reasons this guy said: This movie is almost a masterpiece. However I will--indeed--forget it.

I cannot really explain it. Maybe that was the pace. Maybe it was a bit too much predictable. Someone else mentioned that the movie doesn't "engage" enough. I kinda feel that too.
Hmm... there is just "pain" and "sadness". I didn't feel love or romance. Or expectations. There was no "how are they gonna do that", or "now, what's gonna happen?". No, the movie was... plain in some way.

Now lets see how I rate this:
The acting is flawless (+2).
The music was well chosen and good, but not awesome (+1).
The story is average (+1).
The way it is filmed and directed, decent (+1).
=5

I consider cinema as being a form of art. So I always keep 1 to 2 points in every of my imdb ratings that will belong to my pure "feelings" or "emotions". Stuff that one cannot analyze. That way I can reach a 10/10.
See, I really try to rate the movies I watch properly.

Now why did I choose 7/10 after all? Because I let my feelings talk. The emotions this movie gives are awesome--even with just "pain" and "sadness". I was touched. Few movies do that.
And contrary to the reviewer that seemed to have been offended, I choose to embrace the pain this movie gives. Hence, my feelings = +2.

After writing all of this my conclusion is:
This reviewer was expecting something, he knew what this movie was about. He was also offended by the violence inflicted to the women (it seems). He had preconceptions about Finland. And, maybe he read the book too.

Well, just don't bash this guy :)
When he said "I give the movie a very reluctant 5 out of 10" the way I see it, he wanted to give _more_, but couldn't. I almost did what he did too. But my feelings... gave those extra +2.

Is the reviewer American? I didn't find this movie shocking at all. I admit that I'm not very familiar with Finnish cinema, but I would say that France and Japan are the countries producing the hardest films.
