Marred by bad acting

This could have been amazing but suffers from truly across the board terrible acting. There is not one convincing performance in the entire film. Everyone sounds like they worked very hard to 'memorize their lines.' My guess is they relied on 'local talent' and it was not abundant. Specifics:
1) No one seems afraid. The teen doing face time should be losing it but is calm
2) The couple on the boat are described as 'a successful dentist and a powerful lawyer.' They both look 25 and chatter'Oh my God!' constantly, like teenagers.
3) The motherinlaw on the phone literally sounds as if she is reading the phonebook
4) Everyone with disgusting lesions acts like they have a sunburn
This was a fun premise but you'd be better off watching a B movie with a similar story like 'Humanoids from the Deep'

I think you have a wrong understanding of how real people would act in dangerous situations. It's completely normal for most people to remain relatively calm, even if they have bad looking lesions on their body. You wanted to see people act like they were in a horror movie (screaming, horrified faces). But instead of that you got people acting like they were in a real life.

Although I thought the movie was okay, I have to agree that the acting was poor. Not convincing, and actually quite annoying at times.

I agree. Terrible acting and too much " footage ". You wouldn't have that much footage in reality, some of was too clear for dash cams and again the acting.
The boils and blisters looked like really cheap special fx make up. The storyline isn't a bad idea but everything else ruined it. They tried too hard in some areas making it annoyingly forced.
I cut it off 1/3 of a ways in.
