I agree with you. This movie had me captivated all the way through, but the payoff wasn't as awesome as the rest of the movie made me hope it would be. I expected there to be some grey moral lesson in all of this, especially after the Allied soldier and the Nazi had exchanged their personal information, betraying their respective sides in favor of working together on a more pressing issue.
But not so much. Instead, we got "Nazis are straight up dirtbags" and "good things happen to good people" coupled with "it takes a lot of strength to be a good person." We know all that stuff, already. That's why the payoff felt weak to me.
Just for good measure, here's what kept me captivated:
- The actors were really, really good (equally good was the way the characters were written)
- The dialogue was very effective in many places
- "What in God's name is going on!?"
- "Nothing in God's name; I can assure you of that."
- Really well done gore effects
- Demon makeup was really well done
That all amounts to almost 100% of my viewing experience lacking a moment where I had to pretend an element was good to move past it.
