Lost for words at the ending..

Well, apparently I'm not. But I mean it when I say this is one of the worst endings I've ever seen.

Firstly though, a gigantic pothole unless I dozed off and missed something.

Aaron Paul's character gets beaten up by Anthony Mackie in-front of Casey's character.

Sometime later Aaron is almost caught outside Casey's house because the detective lady was following him and knew who he was.

He got away, but Woody shows a goddamn picture to his bro-officer and they would have at least questioned Mackie about it after the shady beat down, right? No, because Casey doesn't say a damn thing about seeing him at the bar. Not until Aron gets killed near the end does he mention him getting his ass beat by Mackie. Nice detective work there. The best part is Woody going "GEE-GOLLY, Wonder who this guy is; why is he heeeere of all places?"

Anyway, on to the worst ending I've seen in the last decade, probably longer.

You thought Casey's character couldn't be any stupider, along with the others, but nah. He amps it up.

Dude gets ditched 0.1 seconds and no contact on the radio. Nah, this isn't shady, Mack must have fell asleep in the 0.1 second I didn't see him. I mean, this isn't a Van Damme movie, he didn't get put into a sleeper without you hearing SOMETHING.

Better look around calling his name aloud. Oh snap, Aron's here. Can't be a coincidence, where you at MACKIE, need your help!

Okay, the grand finale. You get told who the last criminal is. This dangerous fellow is right in the goddamn elevator with you. He's acting shady as hell. You know it, he knows it. But..

You make it out and this idiot goes in front of you! He's walking away... what do you do? Take a play outta the Elder Scrolls? STOP RIGHT THERE CRIMINAL SCUM!

Nah, you go into your car in disbelief that you made it outta the elevator and in awe this moron walks away in front of you clear for the taking.

Then to top it off you got Woody playing his other character from Now You See Me pulling a Houdini to appear in the guys backseat. about a minute after his call.

I just re-watched the elevator scene and Woody does say, "don't do anything". But this guy really took it to heart. I guess Woody just couldn't help himself in using his master plan of getting shot after getting the drop. I think he really wanted another reason to smoke that joint from the Chinese garbage box again.

Anyway, loved the freeze-frame fade to black after that debacle.

Nice acting though. Loved the cast. Shame about everything else.

Oh, and on a positive note, it was a good feeling seeing Kate all roasted to a crisp. But wait, there's more. I remembered. Chiwetel's character got a gun aimed at him by his would-be-murderer at the start of the movie. Better let my guard down from this psycho who would smoke anybody, cops including, himself even being one!

Man what the hell happened during the making of this movie.

This ending was a total disappointment! I really do agree with you!

It was the way I ended my chapter stories in fifth grade! When I was near the end

of the page so I'd just end the story and write THE END.

This ending made no sense out of all the development throughout the film. When I seen the

credits because the film had ended, it was such a huge let down! Very poor ending indeed!

You're joking, right? Spoon fed? Don't make me laugh anymore at your post, please, I'm dying here.

Gotta the love 'you too stupid to understand the movie and how good it is' excuse people like yourself throw out.

The character of Casey was badly written. The guy was a stoop. He told his brother it was him at the bar. He seen him. get got a good look. He sure as *beep* knew it was him at his house after his brother showed him.

Then, he appears near the end in the abandoned building saving his life. This is all after yelling at him he's a MARK. Now, in any other situaiton maybe someone would find this seriously hard to believe and wouldn't obviously. But after being ditched by Mackie without even the sound of a pin drop and having seen this guy at the Bar and being at his house house, I wouldn't trust Mackie or even Aaron's character at this point.

But, what does he do after having his life saved by him? He asks for Mackie's character to call 911 after reappearing out of goddamn no where. Still trusting this guy. It's complete stupidity and completely unbelievable for Casey's character to be so clueless. The dude is an ex-marine and a detective. He would have all his instincts telling him something isn't right about the situation and Mackies character after all of this.

As for the assassination. That's the only thing that would make sense. Considering Woody's character decides to kill this guy without any proof other than believing it's him because he was the detective on scene for one of the other characters murders. So he just decides to kill him instead of trying to arrest him.

The fact is. The ending was bad and Casey's character could have easily done the job himself when he walked away in-front of him. The characters were stupid on all accounts.

You must have family that helped make this movie to defend this horribly written piece.

And no, I didn't even rate this movie. I hardly ever rate movies as I don't give a *beep* too. But I would give it a 6 just for its acting alone, as I thought that was the only good part.

While I can't argue with the majority of your complaints, one of yours is off base. Chris didn't recognize Gabe until the shootout in the abandoned projects debacle because the photo shown to him by Jeffrey was a clean cut head shaved version when Gabe was police. He didn't get a good look at him outside the bar all the way down the staircase. All he saw was a greasy drug addict with long dirty hair. The same as he looked when he killed Marcus.

To add to your complaints, how did they even get Gabe's file? I don't remember any talk of him mentioning he was former police to his crackhead gal pal. Just that he robbed a bank. And how did Gabe get Chris' home address?

How the hell did Rodriguez possibly get to the crime scene to investigate Gabe's death and the shooting of Marcus that fast? And then he somehow finds Michael back across town on a side street to kill him and takes the money? He kills Michael that easily but lets Chris skate?

Why did the mob kill Russell but not Gabe? Russell was clearly the most competent and tactical of the crew. If they wanted the files that badly, they would've captured Gabe as a hostage to make sure Russell went through with the job.

This movie was great for almost 2/3 of the film but the 3rd act was a trainwreck.

reply

This.

I was going say what Metta did about not recognizing Gabe. Metta is also spot on with the 3rd act being a trainwreck.

This movie has amazing actors, and they didn't do a bad job acting (maybe Kate did, her accent was pretty bad). It sucks that it got so F'ed up because it has so much potential to be a raw, gritty remember-able film.

reply

dude, "memorable"

Remember-able? Really?

Chris (Casey Affleck's character) was Woody Harrelson's nephew. They were not brothers lol

reply

Yeah, you are correct! (How could someone criticize plot holes in the movie while they couldn't even follow that "Uncle Jeff" was not his Chris's brother?)

reply

Did you actually miss the shot where they show WHICH photo of Aaron is shown to Affleck? It is a pic of a much younger (and sorted) Aaron Paul in police uniform. I would have found it odd if Affleck had instantly recognised Aaron Paul's character after meeting him him a dark bar where he is instantly whisked away by Mackie. The portion of the scene where Affleck finally shows up on the stairs and Mackie is kicking the hell out of him has Paul covering his face throughout. Later, when he meets him again in that place where 999 was about to go down, he recognises him and makes the connection.

Woody asked him not to do anything because he knew how dangerous Rodriguez was. He, anyway had no reason to kill Affleck.

Chiwetel has his gun pointed towards Rodriguez in the scene that you mention though, I admit, I found it annoying too when he let down his guard all of a sudden.

They were partners only for like a week so the dude didn't know his partner that well.

For all he knows, his partner might have a habit of disappearing during a search.

Huh?

- Jeff was driving when he called Ling for the name of the officer, who reported the finding of the dead girl.
- around this time, Chris turned up at hospital.
- Ling informed Jeff that it was the Homicide guy.
- the Homicide guy turned up at hospital.

- Jeff arrived in the parking lot and found the Homicide guy's car.
It's safe to assume that Jeff didn't realize Chris was actually in the elevator with the Homicide guy when he called Chris to warn him about the Homicide guy. I'm inclined to believe that he thought the Homicide guy was at hospital to kill Marcus, and that Chris was next on the Homicide guy's clean-up list. His comment "Don't do anything" can be interpreted as "Leave it all to me", which seems part of his characterization, e.g. very protective of his nephew.

- Jeff broke into the Homicide guy's car and waited.
- the Homicide guy walked down and got into the car.
- there it goes, the gunfire.

Works for me. But all that doesn't change the fact that the film is *beep*

I would say the fraction is closer to 3/5 lol

Great acting. Terrible ending.

reply

Yeah if I was the director, I'd probably have pulled my hair out when I read the ending. Why did that cop bother killing the CI? And then he's the first one on the seen too? That guy who tries to kill Chris has an f'n piece of paper with the address on it? Mike blows up Irena even though that probably guarantees Felix is dead? Father of the year sh@# right there. How does a studio OK this sh#$?!?

What a waste of a good cast.

reply

Call me crazy but I actually liked the ending (or 'forgave' it), non-sensical and cynical as it was. Yes, the plot logic gets very fuzzy towards the end but I just went with it because the film is so well-acted and suspenseful. I like how Casey's character is pretty much the only one left standing, as his morals and grit get him through the film.

Definitely not a perfect film but a very entertaining and gritty one.

"This is dead air, Barry....dead air."

And Marcus is still kinda alive. And we don't know that Woody's character died.

In any case, it will be a rough week for the city when four or five cops get shot up, including the chief of police. The mayor and the public will be demanding some big answers.

The only thing wrong with this movie was the script. Unfortunately it's an important thing when it comes to a movie being good or not. A bad but appropriate analogy would be a Lamborghini with the engine of a 78 Pinto.
